Well, I loved the book in high school, so the film meant a lot to me. Try reading the book and then see if it the movie has more of an impact on you (because I do think the movie works better if you're familiar with the book). Either way, different strokes for different folks and all that.

Well, it might be one of those things where the book can work its magic on you at a certain time in your life, and be meaningful to you ever after - but someone reading it later in life mightn't understand why it was so special. I think that's the case for a lot of people with the Perks movie - it's a book that was extraordinarily meaningful to a lot of people at a certain point in their lives, but it won't necessarily mean as much to people who are at different points in their lives & never experienced it.

Unrelated, but this is my feeling on The Goonies movie. I was just too old the first time I tried watching it and utterly failed to see the appeal.

I can't stop staring at everyone in that picture's perfectly shaped eyebrows long enough to read the secret.

Those eyebrows bothered me the moment I saw this poster, but no one ever saw what I saw.

Thanks nonny!

(((I've decided that even if you don't care about my problem with it, namely that "let's show geeks being geeks but have them spend loads of time on their appearance, even though that's one of the things the people we are portraying are derided for not doing" is bloody offensive towards geeks who DON'T care about their eyebrow shaping. I'm just glad someone else noticed it as incongruous)))

i was completely underwhelmed with this movie, and everyone in it...i couldn't get through the book either *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty meeh to this movie but I think I can blame my home country. This book isn't really popular in my home country. Especially because the things which are described in it are pretty normal and you can see something like this in every daily soap for adults or teenagers. I don't understand the hype...

I thought this movie looked cute... but it didn't play in a single theater near me. Meh.

Two Words: Emma Watson

this

I'm surprised it took these many comments for someone to say it

The way OP feels about the movie is the way I feel about Emma Watson.

Kinda off topic but...

"In that moment I swear we were infinite."

What the hell does that even mean? Seriously, I heard that in the trailer and immediately felt violent towards the pretentious twit who wrote it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
That kind of line is what made me react to the book with a resounding "meh". It's very...it treads that fine line where if you're on board with it, it feels very profound and affecting, but if not it just feels affected and like it's trying to be profound and sucking at it.

Also, I pretty much hate it every time a first-person narrator is praised by another character for how great their writing is, because it feels like the author is complimenting themselves on their writing. That happens in Perks (the book) a lot.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 11:18 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, it's such an empty statement. It tries to be all profound and shit but falls flat for me.

It makes a little more sense in context, I guess. It is a very impressive sight.

lol with that vaguely asian looking pretentious gay

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
i think it's popularity mostly has to do with an attachment to the book. i grew up with the book and loved the movie. a friend of mine had never read it and had similar thoughts to you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
All of the Emma lovers can have her. Logan Lerman is the reason I'll be seeing it. Haven't read the book though.

I haven't read the book, but it seems to be a very love-it-or-hate-it thing. I imagine it's the same for the movie.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-20 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. People vary.

I hadn't read the book (hadn't even heard of it). I went into the movie not knowing much and expecting some average teen indie flick - possibly akin to Juno, which I disliked - and yeah, the first half of that played true with some funny... but I left wrung to pieces. Ended up have a two-minute sob to my roommate on the way home.

I think it just depends on whether you personally can find something in it (which may be swaying my opinion somewhat because, yeah: I did. But that's the same with everyone for all movies), or if you have the nostalgia of that first connection at the right time.

I mean, like I said, I disliked Juno and still don't see what the world saw in it. Also don't get the OMGAMAZING about The Avengers even though I enjoyed it.

seriously though. who doesn't know bowie's heroes?

really.

That kid looks like the boy version of Miranda Cosgrove.

i feel like if you've read the book it helps you understand the movie. i'd read the book last year and loved it, but was a little disappointed with how much they cut out from it (pretty much everything involving his family and the relationship with his teacher is gone) and was confused at the end. if i hadn't read the book, i feel like i'd have been really confused about what was going on.
