No. It's a fraction of a second moment that pretty much makes Greedo a really bad shot instead of making Han a cold-blooded killer. And it has no bearing on anything else.

It's the first time the audience sees Han Solo, it's how we're introduced to his character. It's a not insignificant indication of his personality. So, no, it does have bearing.

What do we learn about Han's personality that we don't already learn by seeing his sneaky reach for his gun? To me, seeing that was evidence enough that he was more than prepared and more than willing to take out Greedo if it came to that.

But less prepared than if he shot first. We get to see he's just the kind of bastard who'd take the first shot and have no remorse for it. If it was so insignificant, why change it in the first place? To make him seem like a better guy for not killing until he was threatened? Han's not a good or honorable guy, to counterpoint Luke.

it's not the only part I had problems with. But it serves as the cutoff point... if you get a version before this was edited, you have one of the first versions before edits changed aspects of the story.

Actually it does. It defines Han as a SMUGGLER. Smugglers are in a shady business. They ask questions first then deliver, but when it comes to their lives? You bet damn well they'll shoot first and THEN ask questions later.

Do we know Han is a good guy? Yes, but not until later. When we first see him, he's in a shady as fuck cantina, smug, and looking for money, then hears someone has a bounty on his head. How the fuck would you react?
