No, it is treated as creepy and wrong. Sheldon is the on;y one who doesn't get that.

Exactly. I don't know how anyone could watch that episode and think the characters were shown to be in the right. It is to show that Sheldon has no ability to assess what is or isn't appropriate socially, and also to show his disruptive need for cleanliness, even in someone else's home. Penny demands her key back from them, and while her confrontation is humiliating for Leonard, it is humiliating because he knows what they did was totally inappropriate. She later forgives them for it, which is not portrayed as validating their behavior, but more showing that SHE is a kind person.
