Maris at the beginning of the series until about s4, I think. Maybe s5. His separation and divorce from Maris took a couple of seasons. I think they wanted to make sure and show Niles making an effort to make his marriage work, had to show him WANT to make his marriage work, because I guess they didn't want him to look like a total creep for running straight to Daphne the second he and Maris separated. I noticed during my numerous rewatches that during the episodes where his marriage and separation are part of the plot, they go very light with having him and Daphne interact.

He was married to Mel less than a week7 in s when he found out Daphne had feelings for him.

Yay Frasier secret!!

Considering the show was at its best and funniest in the earlier seasons, that's not too much of a surprise. Also, when he was married he had an actual excuse to go "No no stop it brain!" and try to squash and hide his feelings, and she had an excuse to not even consider him an option.

But when you say "married", do you mean just the period where he and Maris were both married and actually together, the time he and Maris were separated, or the entire period before they got divorced?

I actually think Niles stopped being interesting during the 7th season. Too bad, because season 1-6 Niles is my favorite sitcom character.
