I assume that was the point?

Sometimes I wondered what would happen if Pitch would just turn down his megalomania for just a single second (or a day) and use his powers in a way that makes people believe in him -and scared of him - without letting mass paranoia rule the world. We don't like fear, but sometimes it does help in reminding us of what we have and what we can do to overcome it.

Ahahahaha, actually, that was kind of HIS suggestion according to the backstory comics. But the way North worded the Guardianship thing came across as asking Pitch to back off and basically disappear. Pitch was well aware of what Fear can do, and even allowed a little boy to follow him--telling him that he'd be safer up a tree to escape wolves than he would be running.

OP, have you read his bio on the Rise of the Guardians wiki? I think you'll want to if you haven't!

Me too! I actually found him way more sympathetic then, say, Loki*, even though Loki has a more sympathetic, we-actually-see-it movie backstory.

(Though, his bookstory while not movie canon, is depressing as fuck.) ;_;

* Weird comparison is weird, I know, It's just, my friends and I were discussion this situation specifically, and I have it on the brain still. :)

Yeeeaaaaah pretty much. Pitch was the one I ended up feeling for the most in the movie-and I hated the way they resolved his whole thing. The worst part is it's probably not going to make enough to get a sequel, so even if they wanted to do more with him it's not going to happen. :(

Check out the comics for backstory. rufftoon at dA did a bunch of official stuff (she works for Dreamworks), and a loooot of her work is Pitch-centric.

Oh, I know about all of that! I love rufftoon's comics and I'm planning on getting the books once I have some extra cash. I would have just liked something like that to be included in the movie version, is all.

Yeah, it was kind of weird... They made him somewhat sympathetic, and it was clear that even the good guys felt at least a little sorry for him when kids stop seeing him (esp. Jack for obvious reasons), but then at end when he's being dragged off, they're all like, "Whatever, sucks to be you". The fuck? Do they feel bad for him or not? Make up your minds, writers.

A friend put it this way: the kid who went through him was Jamie, the kid who ha said, not five minutes before, "I believe in you. I'm just not afraid of you."

It was more PURE SHOCK than pity.

I think that was the idea

I feel as if we've been seeing secrets like this (though involving different fandoms) a lot more often lately. "omg I actually sympathized with the bad guy!" Yes, the writers did that on purpose. Not every villain is going to sound like a bad guy from Captain Planet who does things just because s/he's 'evil.' Adding dimension and yes, even sympathetic scenes, for the antagonist makes for a more fleshed-out character and a more interesting film. If you felt sorry for him during this scene, then congrats you're reacting just as a roomful of writers were hoping you would...?

Not to insult anyone's intelligence but I'm worrying about what fandom must be doing to us that we have to admit, in secret, that we were affected by a film in a way that was obviously intended. Is the RotG fandom assholish enough to say you were wrong for finding him sympathetic or something?? Is that why this needed to be a secret? Or are you really young and only just now understanding the concept of a gray-coded villain?
