iPhone 4, 4S, or 5?

[personal profile] biohazardgirl 2012-12-22 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
So my phone-thing expires in a few weeks and I really want to get a new iPhone but I've never had one before. The store that I talked to said there were three choices, 4, 4S, and 5, the 4S and 5 having Siri and the 5 also being larger.

Does anyone here have a iPhone or experience with iPhones? Which is the best one? And anyone with small hands in particular have an iPhone? Tip of middle finger to wrist my hand is about six inches long and sans thumb my hand is two inches across. Is the iPhone 5 too large for you? And how useful is Siri?

I have a 4S right now (hoping to get a 5 soon). It was my first smartphone so I can't compare and contrast. But, I love it. I've had it for about a year. I pretty much never use my PC anymore because I just use my phone for the Internet, email, IM, music, reading, even writing. I don't know how I lived without this thing before. (Just fine, but I now know what I was missing). I haven't really have any problems. My first one that I had for a month had a factory defect, but I had it replaced (no charge). Other than that, just minor technology problems, like safari crashing to desktop on rare occasions. I don't use Siri except to set alarms and such. You have to play with her a lot so she knows your cadence (or so I've heard), and I just don't have the patience.

I have very small hands and I have my phone in a gigantic Otter Box (to protect it). I have no problems using it. I'm typing this comment from my phone right now. Maybe try holding one at the store before you decide to buy it?

I just switched from an iPhone 3GS to an iPhone 5 and the new screen size is a little weird for me to adjust to. If you've had a smartphone before, you might experience the same thing because until about a year ago, most touch-screen smartphones were the same size as the iPhones.

I'd recommend the 5 simply because the previous models will be so out of date that they won't be able to support operating system updates in another year or two and most mobile companies only allow the upgrade every two years. Also, all apps are moving towards the new size screen so while a lot have some blank space at the top right now on an iPhone 5, they won't work on the previous models by summer 2013 unless the developer chooses to abandon the app (no more updates or support and not available in the app store anymore). If you get the 4 or 4S and the apps you have continue to get updates, the app won't work properly because the top part will be cut off.

I got my iPhone 5 only because I have invested a lot of money in the last 5 years on apps and music through Apple. I actually would prefer any Android phone but want my music and apps on my phone without having to pay for them all over again. If you're not already in that position, I suggest taking a really close look at Android phones. The Apple app store has gone way downhill; developers can sell an app and then put out an update that removes functionality and requires an in-app purchase to have it restored. It's happened with almost 15% of the apps in the store and Apple's official position is "We check only for usability" but they don't even do that. So many big name apps (free or paid) just don't work at all. The new Apple maps isn't very good (and is really bad for some places) and while Google maps is now available in a separate app from the store, you can't access your address book using it. Everything about Apple's new operating system and the business practice changes are a huge step backward and the company has made it very clear that they want an Orwellian-type control over their customer's devices.

SA - I forgot to say that Siri is mostly just a fun little novelty but is really very useful at times. If I'm at a stoplight and get a text message, I can use Siri to respond if it's something time-sensitive (which happens only every now and then for me). I don't do it if I'm driving though, even though my state allows me to since it's hands-free operation. Talking is one of the few things that will distract me when I'm driving.

I had an android that had an unfortunate encounter with a toilet last summer which was about the same size as an older iPhone, maybe even a tish smaller, and also had a lovely keyboard along with its touchscreen. I adored it, but I've also had an iTouch for a long while and I've invested money in apple and at this point it only makes sense to have all of my stuff in one spot, because basically otherwise I'll have no music, apps, etc. The androids are lovely for some things (like typing although it looks like they're phasing their keyboards out which WHY), but their storage space sucks.

I hate Apple's recent business policies. You literally can't even call tech support for itunes without having a special paid tech support plan if your device is older than like three months or something. Last time I tried to call their tech support I hung up in absolute disgust; they'll do anything to make more money. They told me because my stuff was on an Asus and my itouch was old they wouldn't help me.

But again at the same time I just want all my stuff in the same place, I'm really tired of having all of these digital investments that I just don't use because I can't carry around two devices all the time.

Then go for the 5. You can use anything that the developers abandon on your Touch and don't have to worry about your phone becoming wholly and completely obsolete before your next upgrade. Typing on the 5 will feel a tad different from the Touch but it's more to do with the Siri button getting smooshed in with all the other keys than anything having to do with the size. (The button to switch between numbers and letters is half the size as you're used to and the Siri button makes up the other half of where it was).

You're welcome! KIM that you can always play with the models at the store to get a real feel for them before you decide. I hope you're happy with whatever you choose.

I also recommend the 5 because I went from the 3GS to this one. The price is a little steeper than getting a 4S but it'll be worth it in the long run. It's the latest one so you'll be able to run any apps no problem for a while. The screen size takes getting used to, but I love the extra screen space (and hard drive space - I went for 64 GB and my 3GS was 8 GB. Ack!).

Really you should be able to get at least 2-3 years out of the 5. :)
