I haven't seen it yet, but I have trouble seeing how making three movies out of it could be anything but unnecessarily bloated.

I'd probably see it anyway if I had the money, if only because I love the book so much and it does look pretty but I don't so... oh well.

Unpopular opinion but...I have trouble seeing how it could've been a decent movie if it had been just one film. Two films could've possibly worked I think, and yes I'm aware how short the book is, but the book is actually pretty lax on details. A lot happens in a very short period of time, page wise. This is coming from somehow who loves it. I just feel like if it had stayed one film (like some people seem to have wanted it to) it would've been rushed as hell. What works for a film isn't necessarily the same thing that works for a book, but if I dislike parts of the movies I can just fast forward past them, while if the movie had been too short and jumbled...you're shit out of luck. Just my opinion, though.

Plus Peter Jackson brought in stuff from the appendices. Idk. I just didn't feel like the movie dragged or was overly long.

I didn't either actually, and I have no problem with him bringing in stuff from the appendices if it's done right. I think it's a pretty neat idea, but I realize this is not something everyone agrees with.

I thought that the bringing stuff in from the appendices was done pretty well tbh. Like idk. The Hobbit was written before LOTR and thus if you're doing a straight adaptation, it just feels like a story that takes place in the same universe.

I think Peter Jackson went to a lot of trouble to actually make The Hobbit feel like a prequel to LOTR. Like idk. I felt like they did a good job of showing how this was all leading up to the events of LOTR and yeah.

Me too. At least so far it fits into the movie pretty well. For those expecting what happens only in the pages of The Hobbit to appear onscreen, those people might be caught off guard, but my opinion is more Middle Earth isn't a bad thing.

I think Peter Jackson went to a lot of trouble to actually make The Hobbit feel like a prequel to LOTR.

Yea, I felt that as well. (Especially with the opening, which I adored. It was a nostalgia trip and a half and I thought it was quite touching and enjoyable.) Actually, I've seen a couple of people complain about that aspect of the movie as well. ... IDK why and that doesn't make sense to me, but people like what they like I suppose.

Same here. My husband and I walked out going "Was that really three hours? Seriously?" because we were not bored for a minute. This wasn't a movie I was checking my watch through at all.

I didn't think this installment dragged either, but story-wise, we're already pretty much halfway through the book (if not more?). I think two films would have probably been ideal. I just reread the book and seriously wondered what the third film is supposed to be about. My best guess is that it will be three hours of the war of the five armies.

Maybe there's still a buttload of extra content from Tolkien's writings that he can put in.

Almost halfway, yea (about 40 pages under if I'm correct). And Jackson is adding some things from the appendices so they'll be continuing some of the 'side-stories' in the next movies, I think. I'm not sure how detailed he's going to be about them and of course it's entirely possible he could screw the whole thing up after this, but I don't mind the idea of it at all. If he gives the dwarves a good deal of screen-time and makes things interesting, I won't even mind.

As for the third film, I agree, it'll probably be mostly about the War. I think Desolation of Smaug will probably end right after Smaug's death.

Yeah, the thing is we don't SEE most of the stuff at Dol Guldur with the Necromancer in the book. We hear about it but don't really get the full meal deal. So I'm assuming that will get fleshed out. Then all the stuff in Mirkwood along with it. Then Dale, Bilbo burglaring, the Battle of the Five Armies...

There's still a fair bit to work through.
elaminator: (The Hobbit: Thorin - strike a pose)

[personal profile] elaminator 2012-12-22 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Beorn too! The whole Mirkwood section will probably be pretty long to make it really feel like the company has gotten lost and are having trouble finding their way out of Mirkwood, and then they get captured twice and Bilbo has to save them. They just hang out in their cells for a while before Bilbo even gets a chance to rescue them the second time, too; he went outside and scouted as well.

A lot happens in the book that could be easily stretched out in movie form. And furthermore, so many things are just glanced over in the book, like the Battle (and Kili and Fili's deaths), which should by all rights be huge and epic. IDK...I think it'll be alright. (It has the potential to be, anyway.)
