In fact, I would draw a distinction between male fans of MLP in general and bronies specifically

Yeah. I don't think this even really needs to be said. Anyone who tries to paint all male fans with the same brush is an idiot. And there are male fans who call themselves "bronies" who don't know about and/or don't associate themselves with the online brony monstrosity.

You would think so, but I know that on more than one occasion when I have mentioned watching MLP with my older brother, I have gotten "Your brother is a brony!? Ew!!!" responses from people who didn't even ask for any kind of clarification to see if he really fit the behaviour pattern. (He doesn't.)

I'd blame the people who made those assumptions, though, not your brother.

i'd blame the people who made brony a 'bad name' rather than the people who react to brony = loads of bad people, enough to be noticeable.

If you ask me, if you need to make up a dudebro word to label yourself with just because you watch material for little girls, you have already made it a "bad name" :P

I know plenty of guys who like MLP and don't need to refer to themselves as something super speshul. They are confident enough to not need a label that separates them from the female fans or fans of older generations.

Same goes for "girl gamers". Girls who need to refer to themselves as "girl gamers" are people I side-eye a lot.

Where did I say that I--or my bro--actually use the label brony? He doesn't and neither do I. Just saying I have a male relative/friend who by virtue of being older than me must be at least in his mid-twenties is enough for other people to respond, "Ew!! Brony!! Kill it with fire."
