Sometimes I won't seek out the actual meaning of a song when I have my own vivid idea about it cause when you have one interpretation sometimes you just want to keep it, and "Hallelujah" in particular shows up on fanmix after fanmix because there's something kind of all-encompassing about the lyrics (at least to me) so I really don't think you're alone in the head canon attachment thing :)

It's a little off-putting to me that a man being tied to a chair seems to automatically equal assault in people's minds, though...IDK

It's a little off-putting to me that a man being tied to a chair seems to automatically equal assault in people's minds, though...IDK

This is a tad off-topic, but IMO it's less about a guy being tied to a chair that makes a lot of people equate it with assault, and more about that line in context with the ones after it. For instance,

"She tied you to a kitchen chair."

on its own would probably have a variety of reactions to it, ranging from "lol whoops now what're you gonna do?" to "omg scary!" to "heeeeeeeey! (eyebrow wiggle)".

But when the line is, "She tied you to a kitchen chair / she broke your throne and she cut your hair," then there's more context to it, and more connotation. If someone's having happyfuntimes being tied to a chair, that's cool, but it probably wouldn't be described as breaking them, as taking something away from them. Likewise, it implies the tied-up person wouldn't have allowed this to happen could he have stopped it, hence the obvious metaphorical connection to rape and/or sexual assault that a lot of people are getting.

And, looking up the lyrics now, there are other lines that could be said to support that theory. For instance, the one right after "she cut your hair" is "And from your lips she drew the hallelujah." Not "and from your lips sprang out," or anything else that might have fit. The use of "she drew" again implies something that the person was not willing to give but had taken from them - drawn out from them - anyways.

(I had a longer, rambling kind of essay here, but it kind of got lost so I'll just end here.)
