Because there isn't some unified "brony fandom". I mean, there's this whole 4chan etc. subculture, but it does NOT include all people who call themselves "bronies". They can't all telepathically communicate with one another or something.

Well, if you can show some sort of Brony-identified fansite that doesn't have any "brony" behavior, I might consider the possibility, but as it stands, if you call yourself a brony you must have been somewhere online that talks about bronies or somewhere bronies post, which would make it pretty hard to ignore their behavior.

I have a boyfriend who enjoys watching MLP. I casually mentioned that male fans sometimes call themselves bronies.

He as accepted that as a term he likes. He's a brony.

He has no idea about the brony culture or that segment's deplorable behavior.

Yet by your reasoning, he is just like them.

He doesn't even know. He's not really into being online and sharing in that aspect. He just likes to watch the show.

Now he's a rape apologist and had no goddamn clue.

fuck you.

So you told him that MLP fans call themselves Bronies, and then neglected to tell him all the rest that they're associated with, and just watch him run around calling himself 'brony?' Bit of an asshole, aren't you? What're you gonna do for an encore, "casually mention" to him that there's a group of people who really like kids that call themselves NAMBLA?

All I know about My Little Pony and fandom comes from online discussions about the fans in places like F!S.
And until this thread I had never seen this assumption that brony = fan who does associate to the rape apologist trend, or even that the rape apology was so big in the fandom.

Whenever mentioned, it looked like just some niche places that did that. I've seen enough fan tribes being lumped as all crazies to not give it credit unless it's backed up. Individuals =/= everyone.

I can see how someone who just likes the show and doesn't go online to share it wouldn't be aware of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Your analogies are a bit weird here, but I agree with you.
It's like mentioning to someone who likes Looney Tunes that those who do are called "Furries". Who the fuck does that?

My boyfriend watches MLP with me and loves it. He even owns a toy. He bought it himself because she is his favorite character.
But I would never tell him he should call himself a "Brony". I think he doesn't even know that there is this mostly male subculture surrounding the cartoon.

He isn't in fandom and in our country the "Brony phenomenon" doesn't exist. There are Bronies, but they are never in the news or anything, haha.

Seriously, friends don't let friends unwittingly identify with messed-up subcultures.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-12-23 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Honest question: who is it hurting if he calls himself that?
visp: (Default)

[personal profile] visp 2012-12-23 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Himself, when people give him the side-eye because they think he's knowingly identifying with Bronies.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-12-23 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
But I don't think that's his fault. It's the fault of the people who think "bronies" is some kind of unified thing and that everyone who calls themself that is a horrible person.

This is kind of a circular argument. I don't think we are going to agree.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
How is everybody supposed to know at all times what all bronies are associated with? I mean, I've heard the term "brony" a shit ton of times, and I have no idea why they're hated, or what they did to apparently deserve all that hate. Saying "all bronies are x because just being part of that fandom means they're condoning what other people in the fandom are doing" is exactly the kind of shit that causes idiots to make assumptions about people based on race, or gender, or religion.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
You should really tell him about how assholish bronies are so he can decide for himself whether he wants to associate with creepy, entitled rape apologists.

This. Thank you. My brother used to use the term Brony because he first became aware of the show from some Brony-identified guys on one of his video game forums. He's never even dipped his toes in the fandom, as far as I know, and the only reason he doesn't use the term now is that I linked some stuff about the grossness of the subculture (as a whole--certainly not in an every single individual who ever used the term way) on my Facebook page that he then saw.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Echoing the "you should tell him"; there are links below for specific incidents if you need them.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, tell him about the brony rep and let him decide for himself if he wants to be associated with the toxic people in there.

Just letting him run around with no idea what that word/group can mean is a dickish move.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Bawwww your poor boyfriend!
You told him to call himself a controversial term that associates him with a controversial subculture and now it's supposed to be visp's fault? Lol, fuck you right back.

Guess what: words have meanings.
"Brony" has many meanings. It's either "male fans of MLP Fim" or "fans in general of MLP Fim" or "fans of MLP" or "dudebros who happen to like MLP" etc etc. To some people "Brony" just means "horsefucker".
So turn on your brain before you go on a neverending quest of defending your BFs brony honor.

your argument is that made-up nicknames have meanings? meanings that have nothing to do with the actual word, and meanings that have only to do with your individual perception of it, because it's not a real word? seriously.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My argument is that suggesting to someone to call themselves -insert word- because of ONE of the MANY meanings of the word is careless and dumb.

"Brony" has no definite meaning. Even Bronies can't agree on the true meaning of "Brony". There are like, three, maybe four camps out there and to each of them the word "Brony" means something else.

There are even Bronies who claim that the word has nothing to do with "bro" but with "/b/" :P

That's what I was going to say. I know a lot of people who would consider themselves part of Anon, but it's not like they explicitly know 100% of the time what other Anons are doing, and it isn't their job to take responsibility for what those people are doing.
