OP
(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 07:01 am (UTC)(link)And if I had any doubts left, some of the responses here confirm the second.
One thing is to be genuinely ignorant, but then act once you have information, and another is to be ignorant and then get angry when people hand you over the information because you no longer can claim ignorance as a defense.
At least some fans seem genuinely willing to see changes.
And because I can imagine some persons will jump to demand to know what I'm going to do myself: I'm still thinking about it. I'm still angry and reeling with some shock. It's so, so tempting to just run away and let the whole fandom crash and burn by its own actions. I'm not even sure if me intervening to denounce the rotten parts of the fandom and encouraging others to do the same would even change its current course of self-destruction and ultimate fading.
I predict a lot of the fandom will disappear over the years after the show ends, with only the most hardcore of the fans clinging to the worst of the excesses currently displayed by some sectors of the fandom.
Hopefully with some time, the resulting fandom will shift into something less histrionic and more sane and laid-back, as the worst of the fans become ever more secluded into their own remote corners of the internet, without the safety nest that having a huge fandom currently represents. They will no longer have so many people ready to pat them on the back and reassure them on their awful behavior in society just because they like ponies, not with such reduced numbers. They will only have themselves.
The remaining sane fans will put up even less with that behavior, I imagine, if the fandom itself is smaller and they feel they can no longer afford to do so. Hopefully they will look more like other normal internet fandoms, where the worst of the worst has to hide because the rest of the fans won't put up with them.
Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:57 am (UTC)(link)You sound like you've got a good head on your shoulders now that you've realised there is a really bad, loud group in the Brony label
"I'm not even sure if me intervening to denounce the rotten parts of the fandom and encouraging others to do the same would even change its current course of self-destruction and ultimate fading. "
I would suggest denouncing it so the bad!Brony's or people watching the wank would realise that the rotten parts are not cool. I think half the reason a portion of FiM fandom is actually taking notice is because people are pointing at it and drawing attention to the rotten parts instead of trying to ignore it. Hopefully more people, who don't know the length of it and hence were defending, would also find out and be similarily appalled. Banding together to go "NO you cannot advocate rape/be a mysoginistic douchebag" and point out the people who do it would go a small way to stamping it out. (Since a huge problem for my corners of the internet was, in addition to the rotten part, the FiM fandom just quietly stood to the side and acted as if it had nothing to do with them or even defended it)

I do hope this happens. Fandoms are always better when they've aged and mellowed a bit, smoothed out the rough spots and so on. But it's still pretty important to make it clear to the bad!brony's that they DON'T have a welcome place in this fandom for bad behaviour.

This is a legitimate response and not generally one that lasts.
