It makes perfect sense that he'd be Sherlock in the modern adoptions -- very few people go by their last names in modern England and America unless it's a nickname -- but in period-appropriate versions calling him by his first name has a very different connotation.

Plus, it helps keep things straight if you're talking about different versions.
ETA: Let me clarify: I really wouldn't go so far as to say people who do this are "bad fans", but I do think there are good reasons--both in-story and out--to keep the names straight.
