fenm: Fish Eye from "Sailor Moon SuperS" (SH: Eyes)

IA. The character in Sherlock and Elementary can be referred to as "Sherlock". The character in book canon, the RDJ movies, and, really, most other adaptations is "Holmes".

Yep.

In part it's just plain a matter of context. It makes perfect sense that he'd be Sherlock in the modern adoptions -- very few people go by their last names in modern England and America unless it's a nickname -- but in period-appropriate versions calling him by his first name has a very different connotation.

Yeah, exactly.

Plus, it helps keep things straight if you're talking about different versions.

ETA: Let me clarify: I really wouldn't go so far as to say people who do this are "bad fans", but I do think there are good reasons--both in-story and out--to keep the names straight.
