IA. The character in Sherlock and Elementary can be referred to as "Sherlock". The character in book canon, the RDJ movies, and, really, most other adaptations is "Holmes".

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

In part it's just plain a matter of context. It makes perfect sense that he'd be Sherlock in the modern adoptions -- very few people go by their last names in modern England and America unless it's a nickname -- but in period-appropriate versions calling him by his first name has a very different connotation.

What if I call him... Mr. Sherlock-kun? Sherlock-sama? No? How about Mistah Sherlock? Mr. Sherlock from da block?

taotrooper: A girl is laughing evilly, maybe yelling something like I AM THE MELON LORD (Toph / LULZ)

[personal profile] taotrooper 2012-12-23 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Mr. Sherlock-kun is way too casual. True fans at least would aim to Sherlock-san or Sherlock-senpai.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I laughed out loud. Really hard.

I see you writing this secret next to a roaring fire while wearing a monocle. Stephen Fry is doing the voice over reading of this secret.

A+

Of course, if Stephen Fry is doing the voice over, he has to add "You may call him 'Shirley,' if you wish."

I'm not going to lie; my immediate reaction to this secret was to wonder whether or not you were making some bizarre connection to the Kierra Knightly adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

"You may only call him Sherlock when you are perfectly, completely, and incandescently happy."

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
O_o Is that an actual line from the Keira Knightley P&P? It's crappier than I remembered, then.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
was that the ending for U.S. audiences, where they're sitting beside a fire or something and he calls her "Mrs Darcy".

because that was terrible.

Are you referring to in fic or something specific like that? Because fans call characters all manner of not-canon things in discussions, prompts, meta, etc. I'll call him whatever the hell I want.

I immediately want to ask what his mother calls him.

In a similar vien, it irks me to no end when someone refers to BBC John Watson as 'Watson' yet calls Sherlock just 'Sherlock'.

Especially in fics. No one in the show EVER calls him 'Watson'.

In Elementary it's more acceptable because Sherlock does refer to Joan as 'Watson'.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Amen.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, no. I think I'll stick to calling him whatever the fuck I want.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Who the fuck are you? I'll call him whatever I want to and that doesn't make me a bad fan. The great thing is about Sherlock Holmes is that he's fictional so I can do whatever the fuck I want to him, including writing fanfic in which people address him as "Sherlock" in Victorian times. ONOES. THE HORROR. ETC.

If you are talking about addressing in fic, then sure, you are likely right.

If you're talking about fans in general, stfu, we'll call him whatever we want.

Amused that your illustration is actually Watson.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "bad fans": ignorant ones, maybe. Or Americans.

Holmes, Holmes, Holmes. C'mon, not that hard, is it?
