Wait, Sami aren't white? Could have fooled me.

I hate to blow your obviously narrow mind but white people can be ethnic natives too.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
If you look at images of Sami from the early 1900s and before, like when the story is set, they look much less white.

Example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Saami_Family_1900.jpg

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I...don't see how they don't look white?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
facial structure and skin tone don't look very typical nordic white, plus they are dark-haired (but white people are often dark haired so that's moot), imo

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Facial structure and skin tone vary greatly between white people, though. Even if they don't look the same as Nordic white, that doesn't mean they're not still white. Plus, ethnicity =/= race, so you can have a group that are a different ethnicity than the general population, but still white.

You mean turn of the last century photos like these?

Nope. Still looks white.

Hi, part Sami here.

My aunt (otherwise Swedish, Irish, Scottish, German, Welsh, and French) is a throwback and spent much of her childhood being harassed for looking East Asian. Her own family joked that she was the adopted Korean child because she looks completely out of place in the midst of an otherwise white family (though my mother also has slightly 'Asian' features and the resemblance is close enough that it's obvious they're blood relatives). There is no denying that there is a typical Sami look that has long lead people to believe that they and the Finns have stronger ties to Asia than other Europeans.

In the top photo, you can see the prominent cheekbones and crescent shaped eyes(quite honestly, I can't look at 90% of the men in that photo and think "white"). The older generation in that photo looks more typically Sami than the younger, indicating intermarriage with white Scandinavians because, shockingly, there are Scandinavians who have had relations with Sami people and have produced children, some of whom more closely resemble the white Scandinavian side.

*Newsflash* White people don't only come with one skull shape. If you think that then you start trampling into "The Aryan Race" territory.

Are you kidding? The photos are old and have often been colored afterwards. Not to mention that the guy in picture might have forgotten to wash the soot off his face.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
And there is the "people with pale skin who spend their entire lives out of doors no longer have very pale skin" factor...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I love how the people that bitch about 'white' characters, just mean 'North American white' and really have no idea about the white folks from other countries or cultures.

How very american-centric of them.

Uhm, I'm American and I am the one who pointed how wrong the original poster was. So, don't paint us all in the same colors. It makes you sound like a narrow minded twit.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
don't paint us all in the same colors

lol i see what you did there

Didn't mean to make a pun but, hey, I'll take the credit.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. There are such thing as "white" natives. It's not like white people came out of nowhere.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-22 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I feel stupid for asking, but I don't really understand. Is it because in the U.S. and Canada for a long time, it was thought only Northern/Central Europeans were white, and in Mexico, people of Spanish ancestry are considered "white"? (Since you said North American)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's because some people refuse to accept that there exist ethnic minorities who are pale-skinned.

What the Jesus fuck is North American white.

Hate to break it to you but whites from North America include descendents of the Spanish, Italians, Greeks, Turks, Russians, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Hungarian, Serbian, Croatian, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Irish, and, oh, every other fucking European country. There's no such thing as North American white.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I'm part Sami. The original Sami people were typically darker-skinned and more Asian-looking than Europeans. There's just been so much intermixing that now a lot of Sami people look very much like white Scandinavians.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
I would just like to say, those are some beautiful pics! Reindeer! Or caribou! (I can't tell them apart.)
mekkio: (Default)

[personal profile] mekkio 2012-12-23 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Reindeer are caribou. They are the same animal. Like a Woodchuck and a groundhog are the same animal.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Why did I not know this? This explains why I could never tell them apart. We have caribou - but Santa has reindeer. They look the same, and yet, my brain was telling me I must be missing some slight difference. Hee hee, I feel stupid now!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
This is like taking a picture of Amerindians today. There's been a lot of racial intermixing with Caucasians in the last few hundred years, so there are certainly people who more resemble Caucasians than anything else.

Posted some pictures from the 1900's. They looked the same. Not all native people are of the non-pale hue.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm part Sami. Maybe you can't see the difference, but the Sami (and the Finns) have long been suspected of being more Asian than other Europeans. For one, they speak a Uralic (Finno-Ugric to be exact) language, which is pretty bizarre in Europe. They also originally had dark skin, high cheekbones, and crescent-shaped eyes, making them noticeably different from most white Scandinavians.

Also, white Scandinavians have been around for a fuckload longer than the 1900s, so I don't know what you think the first returns on Google and some Wikipedia images are going to prove.
