If people have been giving you shit about not being a true fan for not watching Classic Who, tell them to stuff it. They just want something to feel superior about. And New Who is quite a different animal from Classic Who in many ways, and a lot of material in Classic Who doesn't have any essential relevance to New Who because so much stuff has changed in-universe during the gap.

On the other hand, if you're gonna be participating in fandom and doing meta and analysis and stuff, I'd be careful about trying to make great sweeping generalizations and definitive statements (about, say, companion relationships, or regeneration, that kind of thing), since you kinda have only been exposed to a section of the canon (and a quite unique section when it comes to the relevant external and characterization factors -- Time War and all), so just be aware of the gap in your knowledge in order to not look stupid.

Also, the Classic Who Doctors and Companions are pretty fucking awesome characters, even if the stories are told very differently. So if your interest ever does perk up, you can cherry-pick a few of the best serials just for curiosity's sake.

And hire or by the DVDs so you can watch the whole story all at once.
