Rant about Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom loves watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel each Christmas. Which, in the past I didn't mind.

But over the past few years there's been at least FIVE different movies with the same fucking message. If a woman is offered a once in a life time opportunity for her job, she has to give it up because ~family is more important~, or ~family is what REALLY brings you happiness~. Oh and it gets worse. If she takes up the job offer she's portrayed as a heartless bitch, and eventually she realizes she's not TRULY happy at her dream job! She changes her mind, and in the end comes running back to the man she loves and becomes a housewife.

These movies have really skeevy underlying messages and I'm fucking sick of them.

I've just watched on like this last week! A woman with rowdy children gets a chance to have Mrs (childless and single) Businesswoman's job. She does, discovers her other self is despicable, misses her family, reconquers her husband (who, in this alternate reality, is engaged to Mrs Businesswoman). She goes back to her own reality and quits her job for another, with fewer hours (but with Mrs Businesswoman as a partner, admittedly). Her husband NEVER says he should cut back his hours or do more chores around the house.

SA

Her husband NEVER says he should cut back his hours or do more chores around the house.

Oh yeah, that pisses me off too. The man NEVER has to change in these movies, only the woman and it's only WOMEN that ever have to make these kind of choices.

Yeahhhhhhh Hallmark movies are really kind of crappy and there are just so many of them - they're like tribbles or something, they replicate. And they all have the exact same messages with minute variations - they're the same movie and they reinforce the same message and none of the messages are really good. And, I don't know, it's just really shitty and having those messages repeated over and over just does not seem like a good thing.

omg that could be my house! my dad loves Hallmark movies and the rest of us just roll our eyes at him because they are so ridiculous and it's the same message all the time.

Oh man, OP, I know that formula and I hate it, but when I tried to think of movies that fit it, my mind blanked and the only one that comes to mind is actually about a man.

And now I can't remember the name of the movie, but the guy is a successful businessman who's a sad lonely jerk, and on Christmas Eve he gets taken into an alternate reality where he married his high school or college sweetheart and has a family and is so much happier and nicer and the biggest "drawback" is that he's only upper middle class instead of mega rich.

That sounds like The Family Man with Nicolas Cage.

My sisters insist on watching these when we're all over at my Mom's house because "we don't get the Hallmark channel!"

Those movies make me want to barf.

I hear you. The "Love/'s _____" series on Hallmark makes me want to trash the sets the fucking movies were shot on with my dad's truck.

My family makes fun of the Hallmark "Christmas" movies. They're terrible and I'm sorry you have to put up with the bullshit messages the films give out.

Have you seen the Nostalgia Chick's "The Christmas Shoes" review? It's hilarious. It might make you feel better.

....I had no idea there was a Hallmark channel. But I live in Canada so that's probably why and it sounds like I'm not missing much.
