Any cross-stitchers out there?

Having spent the last 2 years learning to stitch from packs, I want to start designing my own projects. Does anyone have any advice about good or bad software?

I'm more interested in setting text and line drawings to canvas, rather than trying to reproduce photographs or similar, in case that makes a difference.

Ooh, I'm gonna have to keep an eye on this thread. I cross-stitch and have an Etsy of my own self-designed pieces, but they are mostly text-based or rather minimalist. I design mine by printing out graph paper and making lots of "x"s with a pencil :/

OP here, yeah I've done a couple of own designs for small projects, but I find it really annoying trying to get it right. For some reason I am incapable of lining up my borders, something's always off centre, and drawing it all out again is really irritating.

Now that I'm starting to get commissions for bigger projects I really need some software to help me :-)

I'm going to give the free trial that was suggested below a go, see how I feel about it. Best of luck!

PC Stitch! :D I've used it for years, to do anything from re-create art to create cutesy things to words! It has all the true type fonts in it and some built in borders, and it's very easy to use in general. I'd recommend it for an all-around software.

You can download and fiddle with it for free with all it's features except save, so give it a try if you want. The full version costs something like $50 bucks, but I bought it years ago and it has never failed me yet. :)

(Depends on how big of a cross stitcher you are, I suppose--I do one a month or so).

Ooh I'll certainly give that a test drive. I'd heard good things about it before, but no one mentioned the trial.

You're welcome. :) Also, if you do decide to buy it, I'd make sure you get the backup disc (I don't know if this is optional or not.) Nothing made me madder than when my comp crashed and I lost my software. :|
