I might spend $50 on a friend. Sometimes money is tight, sometimes I can splurge a little. I don't feel comfortable saying how much I spent (though it was less than 50 per person), but I was able to get things for my two closest friends and both my parents this year.

I don't think it matters if it's a friend or family. Some of us have friends that we love as much or more than family.

To clarify, I would spend $50 if it was the absolute perfect thing for that person (and if I had the money, of course). Sometimes the perfect gift is actually pretty cheap.
