Duh. But normal people just rip off Latin or something else people have a base from which they can make associations with, not make up new sounds just for shits and giggles. But now I'm going to go talking about lolowallygagging now just because I made it up.

Lolowallygagging sounds kind of awesome, though. Can I come, too?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
They do sound odd, but they're also not just pulled out of nowhere. Most of them have their basis in the gendered pronouns we have in English and they follow those conventions.

reminds me of a few years back when they invented a word "not/no longer thirsty" for my first language, based of our word for "not/no longer hungry".

Luckily it never caught on, because it was silly.

Yes, language is invented, but new words only stick around if they are used frequently, by the masses. Somehow I don't see that happening with the gender neutral pronouns right now, not even in academia.

Only sitt was a really, really useful word. Just it sounded fucking ridiculous.

Someone needs to make a new one up.

The only one I don't get is "thon."

Any of the others, I don't mind, and I'll certainly use whatever pronouns someone wants.

But "thon" just bugs me, because it's also apparently the French word for "tuna," and it makes me want a tuna melt.

Thon is a neologism from the 1880s and is a contraction of "that one," which at least is a little more graceful than just slapping a letter on the front of an old pronoun imo.

Either way, it's "tuna" and it makes me want a tuna melt.

I'm hungry now.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It is the French word for "tuna"! It is also a derogatory way of calling someone ugly.

*sigh* Leave it to the SJWs every time. Seriously, you show me ONE piece of video from RL where someone has used these "pronouns" and I will guarantee you there will be at least ONE person in said video going, "Bwuh...huh?" o.O

I don't have any videos, but I do know someone irl who prefers gender neutral pronouns (my former roommate, actually). Very few people, including hir parents are even willing to give it a shot, and those who will at the very least try (like me) still usually need to have the concept explained to them. I don't see how respect for real people's preferred pronouns is even relevant to this secret, though, tbh, given that it's about people switching around the pronouns used by characters *in canon* just because they don't suit their political agendas.

How do you even say hir out loud? it sounds like her?

I was taught that it's like "here".

I notice the radio silence surrounding this comment.

that's what I get for having the window open too long.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-25 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! I didn't mean it like that. I meant that, in French, "thon" is a derogatory way of calling someone ugly. Really, it's a slang term! (as well as the word for tuna)
