Writers who do this, grimdark for grimdark's sake only, are insulting with this attitude because we experience the bad things in life as it is.

BUT DON'T YOU KNOW THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO MOVE THE PLOT ALONG? KILL SOMEONE OR RETCON SOMETHING MAJOR OUT OF EXISTENCE! IT NEVER BACKFIRES EVER! AND IF THE FANS GET UPSET, WELL, OBVIOUSLY THEY JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE GENIUS BEHIND IT!!

Ugh, for real. Every time I see a writer talk about how it's boring to write about happy people I just want to shake them and point out that it's not very fucking interesting to watch/read about people who are constantly miserable, either.

OH, I AM SO IGNORANT!!! YES, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GENIUS BEHIND THE X'TH NUMBER OF DEATHS, DESPAIR, DESTRUCTION, ROCKS FALL DOWN, EVERYONE DIES!!!! HOW COULD I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS?????????

So damn true. Angsty emo edgy shit for it's own sake bores me to tears. If a developing character turns out to be happy, let that character be happy, geez! It doesn't even have to be about happy people, it has to be about interesting people and constantly miserable people or situations are not interesting. Teh grimdarks is just another device to be used with care in writing, like any other. Overuse it, and the writing will suck.
