How about just politely asking the author if they would like crit? If they say no, that's just too damn bad.

Plus, a lot of crit I see also ends up being the reader's bias or them just acting entitled because the fic is not how they want. You're entitled to say so, but you can't force the author to hear it or to give a shit.
