No, you're not missing anything.

There isn't any more in the show between Stiles and Derek than there is between anyone else. Not to say there's nothing there. Just that you could just as easily see Stiles/Danny, Jackson/Derek, Erica/Allison etc. There's kind of a little bit of fun stuff happening between everyone but nothing significant enough for me to have predicted Stiles/Derek coming out as strong as it does. I guess I'll just write it down to them being fan favorites and the fact the fandom has always loved pairings that bicker and compete. So they'll take that and run with it.

I'm firmly on the "ship all the ships" boat.

Can't edit my comment. I just wanted to add I kind of got into the show the same way. All the excitement from fandom made me curious and the idea that Sterek was on it's way to be canon. That part didn't live up to it's hype but I still saw chemistry there. I'm really glad I started watching the show though. Just for all the hilarious horror that it brings. And Peter Hale. Peter Hale is one of my favorite things ever.
