These discussions always sort of baffle me. It's as if people take extreme sides where either anything goes, or else you can't concrit at all.

Should people who post stuff online be prepared for the fact that not every response will be positive? Yep. They should, and maybe as they mature they'll get stronger and be able to handle it. This does not mean it's my job to ~toughen them up. Conversely, the well-meaning people who feel the need to critique everything "for your own good" also ought to be able to see that not everyone is like them.

Is it so hard to understand that while revising and editing, critiquing and re-thinking and trying again, is fun for me (and it is), for a lot of people it's work and not fun at all? Why is it such a problem to determine which kind of person you're talking to before you dump a load of "How to Improve" on them?

This is why I never make concrit my first interaction with someone. Even if they're the kind of person who likes critique, I need to know if I'm someone they care to hear from. Yes, yes, I know: EVERYONE STOP WHINING, YOU ARE GOING TO GET NEGATIVE FEEDBACK FROM RANDOM PEOPLE SO LEARN TO DEAL. True, but that does not mean I have to be one of those random people. I'd rather respect other writers (and myself) enough to find out first if my input is wanted.

Even if the answer is yes, I prefer to give and receive critique in PM or in locked posts, rather than in public comments. It spares the dignity of the writer, and spares the critic from the anger of other readers.

Well said. Very well said and I agree on all points.

You are a beautiful person.

I especially love your point about giving and receiving critique in a more private place. There are some people who are fine with getting concrit publicly, but for some people it can sometimes feel like your teacher pulling you to the front of the class to discuss all the mistakes you made on an assignment while everyone else listens in. That's not usually the intent, but some people do find it a lot harder to listen to the advice being offered if they're embarrassed that other people are seeing all their flaws being recounted, so to speak.

Yeah, I find it awkward and I also wonder if it will dampen other readers' enjoyment of the story.

Not to mention, if I am the one doing the critiquing, it's very possible that I will have misread, accidentally a paragraph somewhere, or come up with a really boneheaded suggestion that I have to take back. This happens, and I would rather it didn't happen in public.

There is definitely that, too! I think a lot of people commenting are overlooking the fact that just because someone is offering concrit, it doesn't mean they're not going to make mistakes, too. I'm glad that most of my mistakes of that nature aren't out there for people to see, since most of the concrit I offer tends to be in the form of beta work.
