I acknowledge that there's people who are young or "lagging" (nice way of putting it), but at the same time, isn't that how they learn? It's how I did. I mean, sure, I got some pretty nasty reviews and so did some of my friends - I mean, truly nasty, spiteful shit that was more intended to troll than to be helpful. But the truth is... well, I'm horrible at certain games, and when I play them, people around me tell me what I should do differently. They don't think I'm trying to be the next professional athlete, they're just trying to help me refine my skills. If I didn't want that, I wouldn't participate.

Again, I totally agree that there's a certain mentality (or there used to be anyway) that it's acceptable to be absolutely horrible to writers who probably are kids and/or lagging a little. And that's horrible. But there's a big difference between "die in a fire this fic sucks" and "(insert positive feedback here), but just one tip..."

Different anon, but I think that while that is the way a lot of people (myself included) learned, it's not the only way to learn. New writers do need to get used to the idea that their work isn't going to be universally liked because no one's work is universally liked and that sometimes they're going to make mistakes and people are going to point those out. But I think there are some people on the other side of the issue who kind of act like since it's the Internet, then the only way that authors will ever learn this is by people being assholes to them to "toughen them up", so if they act like kind of a dick but then call it concrit it's totally okay because it's just the Internet and it's the same trial-by-fire that they had to go through to improve. Honestly, I'd rather people were able to learn in ways that didn't involve people being unnecessarily nasty to them. It was horrible when I went through it, and that's one experience I really wouldn't want other new writers to go through if possible. Especially since that kind of thing can scare people off of writing or even certain fandoms for good.

Yeah, I agree that there are people who are horrible, and that does discourage writers. (I'm sorry it happened to you.) I've been there myself, as have friends. I guess I just think there's a happy medium.
