(Anonymous) 2012-12-26 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)because the only one I could find is Orci making a comment about Spock needing a hug and the scene being the best access point to reveal the controversial relationship to the audience.
Orci also stated that JJ basically decided to direct the movie only after he read the Spock/Uhura scenes.
That's not the same as saying that Spock needing a hug was "the only reason". Hyperbole much?
They just didn’t come together in that moment for convenient story-line for sure…. Didn’t J.J. Abrams repeat several times in the dvd commentary that these two are in love?
Friends can hug each other too so Spock didn't need a girlfriend for that, you know.
So, you know, puts a different perspective on things
like, Orci and Krutzman wrote a script and the whole thing about Spock needing a hug in a moment of terrible sorrow implies the basis of an idea that is not regulated to the confines of that scene alone and that after the decision was expanded upon, added different layers and used for different potentials (like the first time in ever that someone has the guts to try writing a Spock who is actually in love and not under the effect of some alien numbo jumbo?) . It all began with the ship reassignment scene and builds from there. That's why turbo-lift scene should feel like the most appropriate moment where a relationship that the writers knew it would be controversial could get revelated to the audience in a moment where you feel like giving a hug to Spock yourself so his girlfriend being there for him feels right.
