The chapter system is not a bad thing, imho. It's not like the story doesn't move to the top of the page on each fandom's index page when it's updated, after all.

I agree, I ran into a story like this yesterday, and each part was like two pages long. Just... why?

I can forgive two parts being close together but if they all end up one after another it pisses me off and guarantees I won't be reading that fic (fics?).

I once had one author take up a PAGE AND A HALF on AO3 with shit like this. Their summary led me to believe they weren't that good of a writer anyway. Which, I assume, is why they were using that posting form instead. I think they hoped to get higher view counts.

I think having the "Part 1 of this series" thing is great and I know great authors who use it. Unfortunately it definitely has the possibility of being abused.

Ugh, agreed. Recently in one of my main fandoms, a lot of writers from Tumblr have started posting on AO3 and do this. Just spread out your posting, dammit!

This makes me absolutely crazy!!! Someone in a fandom I follow writes "micro-fics" of 25 words. Which, BTW, are NOT even stories. Then posts them separately!!! STOP doing that!!! Make them chapters!! For the love of all that is holy. STOP filling up AO3 with your inane "fics." Please go back to tumblr.

God, yes. Not only does spamming raise my ire and frustration, but it also makes it harder on me if I actually happen to want to read your fics. For reasons of deteriorating eyesight, I do my reading these days on an ereader, and downloading a bajillion individual parts that will inevitably be put out of order and mixed in with other stories just makes it so much more frustrating. Whenever possible, use chapters!

omfg, yes. this recently started happening in a fandom i read. like, take the fifteen 10-word fics you wrote and put them in the same post, fucker. and if you happen to write thirty 10-word fics in different fandoms, then still put them in the same post so that other people aren't annoyed by your ridiculousness.
