I don't hate on Hufflepuff, but I admit to being kind of baffled when Pottermore sorted me there. I always thought I was a Ravenclaw shoo-in, since basically I was Hermione all the way through school but with Luna's tendency to focus on learning weird things rather than useful/important things. I figured if Luna was a Ravenclaw in spite of her eccentricities, I probably belonged there too!

Then I got Hufflepuff, and I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't pay enough attention to any Hufflepuffs to have any clue what qualities I might have that line up. I mean, I know the overview, but it seems like the general summary of Ravenclaw fit in more ways, and I'm just not sure I understand what Hufflepuff is about.

It's kind of a lame thing to puzzle over, admittedly, especially when I'm not offended. I just don't like not understanding things. (Which is why I figured I'd be Ravenclaw.)

From what I understand, Hufflepuff is about loyalty, fairness, and hard work. A Hufflepuff is a person who will never give up on you, no matter what you do or who you are (see Tonks). A Hufflepuff is somebody who will do their utmost to make sure everybody is on a level playing field and that nobody has an unfair advantage (see Cedric Diggory when the Hufflepuff-supporting Dementors sabotaged the match and he wanted a replay). A Hufflepuff will work hard and do their best to help whatever the situation (see Professor Sprout growing the mandrakes with hard work and dedication to save those petrified).

I always thought I'd be a Ravenclaw too, but I ended up in Hufflepuff and I think it's because I am very loyal to those I care about and a big stickler for things being fair. In fact, when I was a kid, I would say "That's not fair!" so often that my parents' catchphrase became "Life isn't".

So yeah. Hufflepuffs.

Hmm. Yeah, it works, in several senses. I'm a workaholic, was one even when I had a crappy job (and felt bad about leaving my boss in the lurch when I got a better one), switched churches a couple years back to go to one invested in equality and social justice issues (and that was HARD because of the loyalty thing, despite the years of growing frustration with the old church's positions on gay rights, there were many good but misguided people there)... but I dunno. I always thought my quick learning and high IQ were my defining points. Maybe I just focused too much on them at the expense of noticing other qualities in myself.

But it's definitely true that once I've said someone's a friend, that doesn't change for anything.

I was just the same; I'd always pictured myself as a Ravenclaw by virtue of my bookworm tendencies and general love of new knowledge. When Pottermore sorted me into Hufflepuff though, it was like a revelation - of course I'd be a Hufflepuff; I'm all about the loyalty and friendship. I just never noticed that about myself til I was sorted and talked it over with some friends.

The thing is, as they pointed out to me, there's a lot of wiggle room in the houses. As Hermione proves, there's nothing saying you can't be a smart, bookish Gryffindor. Or by extension, an intelligent, quick-learning Hufflepuff, or even a brave Ravenclaw or for that matter a loyal Slytherin!

I think I would be the laziest Hufflepuff but yeah, basically, this is how I would see the house. It's about being decent, working hard, trying to live according to your own values and doing as much good as you can. That sort of thing.

this pretty much sums up the way I view the house. I think of hufflepuff as being for fundamentally good people, who may not know what they're good at yet, but who try their best in everything they do.

(not to say that other house members can't be good people.)

I suspect that the majority of people who signed up for Pottermore would be Ravenclaws compared to the general population, so they had to skew the test results to get an even distribution between the four houses.
