Yeah, but that should tell you something right there -- the first ones were a new thing at the time, an experiment, and frankly weren't expected to do all that well. The second ones were done 30 years on when Lucas had theoretically had time to hone his craft, think about what he was doing, and the time and budget to do them right because they were expected to be successful.

Cliches and lazy writing you can get away with in a new genre are not acceptable 30 years on.

Not just that, but I feel like the characters were all more boring, too. For the most part, the prequels did not have cliched figures, because the characters did not have personalities. The original trilogy was full of cliches, but at least the characters were fun and not boring.

Oh, but I will point out that the idea of I'm-gonna-rescue-myself princess wasn't a cliche at the time. That was the point behind the line "Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper?". You were led up to the idea that she was this sweet, mystical girl through that hologram of her. The hero enchanted by her figure and all. And then he meets her, and she just snarks at him and grabs gun and shoots her way out. Cliche now, not then.
