Not just that, but I feel like the characters were all more boring, too. For the most part, the prequels did not have cliched figures, because the characters did not have personalities. The original trilogy was full of cliches, but at least the characters were fun and not boring.

Oh, but I will point out that the idea of I'm-gonna-rescue-myself princess wasn't a cliche at the time. That was the point behind the line "Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper?". You were led up to the idea that she was this sweet, mystical girl through that hologram of her. The hero enchanted by her figure and all. And then he meets her, and she just snarks at him and grabs gun and shoots her way out. Cliche now, not then.
