"Or you might belong in Hufflepuff, where they are just and loyal/Those patient Hufflepuff's are true and unafraid of toil."

I dunno, that always sounded to me like the house where the best human beings around all went. Brave and bold people can be arrogant, vain, stupid assholes, smart and scholarly people can be insipid, pretentious do-nothing snobs, and ambitious and cunning people can be vile, scheming, back-stabbing creeps, but Hufflepuffs? Their worst common trait seems to boring sensibleness. Where exactly does "stupidity" factor into that description?

Cheer up, OP. Don't listen to those idiots.

Hufflepuff always struck me as a house whose "thing" was, basically, being solid, decent people. And that's frankly where I'd want to be, and more than that, it's the kind of person I'd want to be - I'd rather aspire to be like a Hufflepuff than any of the other houses. Sensible, reasonable, well-balanced, decent people.

This, so much.

I know in my heart of hearts that I am a Gryffindor but I try to be as Hufflepuff-like as I can since I think being kind and hard working is the best traits I can aspire to have.

True. Plus, aside from that, I think Helga was the best of the Founders. Gryffindor wanted to focus on the bold adventurous kids, Slytherin wanted the ambitious cunning ones (with ~pure blood), Ravenclaw wanted the ones with a thirst for knowledge, and all of that is nice! They want the ones that they see some of themselves in. But then Hufflepuff said "I'll take the lot, and teach them all the same." like....seriously you guys ♥

Yes! After I posted the comment I was like "damn, I wanted to also mention how Helga is awesome!" but people had already commented. *hearts*

(btw, how do you do one of those little text hearts that you have at the end of your comment?)

This. If you would ever want advice, you'd take it from a Hufflepuff before anyone else.

I think the problem is that, on paper (esp. in an adventure story), that description boils down to "boring" and there is, apparently, no greater sin.

Commenting on a moldy old post to both agree and disagree. I mean, I've thought many times that while Ravenclaw and Gryffindor each get one of the major virtues (wisdom and courage, respectively) as a House trait, and Slytherin doesn't get any, Hufflepuff gets three--patience, diligence, and justice.

On the other hand, I can see someone like Cornelius Fudge as a Hufflepuff gone bad--not, as some fanwriters seem to suggest, because he's stupid, but because as Minister of Magic, he read like a backbench politician who has always patiently paid his dues, loyally supported the important people while being content to stay on the sidelines, done the dirty work nobody else wants, and now feels entitled to claim his just reward.
