Small Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
So, I got the Ice Age all-films boxset for Christmas and watched number four last night. It was more awesome than I expected. But now I crave fanfic (mostly with Diego, 'cause I adore him), but I can't find anything at all. FF.Net has practically nothing and even less for his character. So I is a sad bunny.

Any fandoms you wish were bigger, F!S?

COMMUNITY

Well, some other things too. But mostly Community, lbr.

Though I'd really, really love if the fanwork-based side of AKB48/H!P/other Japanese girl group fandoms was bigger. They are actually pretty big fandoms, but practically no fic, at least in the English-language part of the fandom. It's not shocking in a male-dominated fandom, but still disappointing.

Also, I kind of forgot, but I wish there was a Marmalade Boy fandom. It's one of my favorite comic series ever, but the only fandom that seems to exist involve Geocities webpages xD

i'm not in the ice age fandom but i know how you feel. it sucks to crave fanfic for a series that doesn't really exist.

i feel like every time a mention of "small fandoms" comes up, i mention weetzie bat. however, it's a series with lots of room for character interpretation and AUs and crossovers with other fandoms with magic. then again i'm biased because i love francesca lia block's writing and the weetzie bat series impacted me greatly both as a person and as a writer.

my other fandoms tend to be well-reviewed but underrated young adult fantasy novels with a small yet scattered presence so i want a larger, more organized fandom for all of those well-reviewed but underrated young adult fantasy books. (graceling, eon, delirium, and cinder are some books that come to mind, among others.)

...i could talk about the state of my fandoms for hours so i'll stop while i'm ahead ^^;;

Uh, I hear you. But what'd you like to read for Ice Age? Frankly, I don't see there any productive themes for fanworks.

All my three main fandoms. In two of them I'm completely alone, in the third one there're two of us. It seems I'm damn lucky, doesn't it?

Polar Express, Catch-22(+Closing Time) and Murder Rooms.

Plus I'd love some non-shipping works for Poirot (both the books and the series), 'cause right now everything there is Poirot/Hastings.

And I wish Father Brown fandom bloody existed.

In my smallest fandom there are basically 4 of us.

#1 - likes to read and write porn
#2 - likes to read and write plotty stuff, doesn't read porn
#3 - draws a bit
#4 - ships a different pairing.

Not the most functional of fandoms.

Jam & Jerusalem

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's a BBC show written by Jennifer Saunders about a Women's Institute in the West Country. (Think Calendar Girls as a TV show.) I discovered it earlier this year, and I'm madly in love. I'd kill for an active fandom.

The Expendables. I've already read all the fic on AO3, the FF.net section is full of Mary Sue crap, and I'm too scared to see what horrors lurk on tumblr.

All of mine.

I wish the Community fandom was as big as the Sherlock fandom because I always want more AU's and we have a decent amount of writers in our fandom but most people don't write AU, especially the kind where you don't have to be aware of another fandom to enjoy it. So then I have tons of half-started documents and AU prompts in my file folders because I am one of the few people who likes writing them at the moment and I think there should be more people to write them because I know objectively that much better writers than me exist.

I wish Adventure Time fandom existed off of tumblr.

There can never be enough High School Musical Chad/Ryan slash fic and I'm not even embarrassed to say so.

I wish Danny Phantom had writers that weren't all thirteen years old.

I wish Wall-E had a fandom that wrote all sorts of things about that world.

Community AUs? :DDDDD I lovelovelove AUs, so that sounds exciting! What sorts are you writing/want to write?

HSM fandom was pretty big while the movies were still airing, actually. There seemed to be new Chad/Ryan fic like almost everyday, and there was a really active Disney Channel community with tons of discussion. Though I was more of a lurker in it, it was one of my favorite fandoms to be in just because of the positivity and amount of great fic. Chad/Ryan is my HSM OTP!

Pretty much all of mine. I seem to exclusively fall in love with obscure underappreciated RPGs, while having no interest in any game that's popular. For example...

.hack//G.U.
The Last Story
Pandora's Tower
Valkyrie Profile
Odin Sphere
Mana Khemia
Ar Tonelico
Golden Sun

Why can't I just like Pokemon or something.

Pokemon is one of those 'abandon hope, all ye who enter here' fandoms.

Ar Tonelico and Valkyrie Profile not having fandoms makes me sad, because they're beautiful game series that just need more love.

KingKiller Chronicle (The Name of the Wind/The Wise Man's Fear).

The author's blog is full of comments! Yet there is NO fandom whatsoever. Just a couple of fics!

I hope they make a miniseries some day and it attracts more people :/

I just finished reading The Wise Man's Fear today! Very much enjoyed it, looking forward to the next book.

I, uh. Don't have any plans to write fic for it though.

Some of these I've mentioned before, but eh.

Gears of War (I wish it existed, period.)

Halo (More fanfic, icons, graphics, etc.)

Hot Fuzz (I doubt the fandom is still kicking, but I love that movie and always wished there was more of a fandom for it.)

Pendragon (The book series. Also nonexistent to my knowledge.)

The Dead or Alive series (So much shipping potential! The smut would practically write itself! Seriously, WHY DOESN'T THIS HAVE A FANDOM?)

Luther (Would love to see Luther and Alice's relationship explored further, and case-fic would be excellent.)

Metal Gear Solid (It's MGS, it should have ALL the fic.)

Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio Future (Again, it had an almost nonexistant fandom, and what little there was has to be dead by now. But the games are so damn pretty and the art work is so interesting; to this day there should be fanart galore.)

Lost Odyssey (I never even finished this, but I adored this game so much. It had a fascinating story and a great cast of characters.)

Justified (Raylan and Boyd should've inspired a thousand fics, and that's ignoring the other characters and Boyd/Ava, which seems like it might interest people too.)

annnnnnnnnnd The Authority. (Because it's awesome, also has a wonderful cast, and COME ON, has happily married gay superheroes.)

...Pendragon? By DJ MacHale? Ack, I would love a fandom for that. I haven't read it in a while, but I just want all the fic for it. I can't believe there's actually a person here who's read that!

(Metal Gear Solid is also pretty awesome!)

Yes, I've got quite a few I wish were bigger. Or at least more active, since bigger isn't always better when it comes to fandoms.

Nana
InuYasha
Final Fantasy X-2
D.E.B.S

I'm sure there's a ton that should be on the list that I want to see more of.

I wish there was a bigger community for:

- Here is Greenwood (Shinobu/Mitsuru OTP)
- The Twelve Kingdoms
- Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (Balsa/Tanda need WAY more love)
- The Tenth Kingdom
- Harvest Moon/Rune Factory for fics and art
- Farscape

Almost all of my fandoms are small. :-( I think the only big ones I've written for are HP, Doctor Who, Star Trek, and Avengers/the MCU, and none of them more than short one-shots. As opposed to Ghostbusters/RGB, Eureka, Buckaroo Banzai, Real Genius, and TRON, where I churn out novellas more or less by accident. Probably my fault for having so many fandoms from the '80s/'90s - CardCaptor Sakura, Back to the Future, Sneakers . . . although Eureka's fairly recent, and so is Phonogram, and no one writes in the second and the fandom for the first died immediately after the finale aired.

TL:DR No one reads my fic because I write weird pairings and gen in tiny fandoms.

Bomb Girls and Being Erica. I keep trying to get people into them just so I have more people to talk about them with, but it's been an uphill battle. Although there do seem to be more people into Being Erica since it's airing in the States as well.

A lot of mine...The main one right now being Red vs Blue, though it's still chugging along. There's also a lot of YA fantasy I wish had fanfiction written for it.
