Re: Trigger warning: Mentions of rape

(Anonymous) 2012-12-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I know I don't represent everyone who reads/writes/enjoys rape/non-con fic, but I would like to mount something of a defence.

I am someone who on occasion, reads and writes non-con* fic. I do this because it helps me to process some events from my own life. I don't wish to, or intend to, get into a discussion about people 'enjoying' being assaulted, this is something I have a lot of trouble with in the vast majority of instances, but I would like to mention two things:

1) There is a biological explanation for some people getting some enjoyment from what is actually abusive. Particularly if you are talking about a child; it can and does happen IRL, and often leads to incredible guilt when the survivor reaches sufficient maturity to understand the reality of what happened.

2) In certain circumstances, with well-written pieces, it is possible to read this type of story and feel a sense of reclamation, that in enjoying the act the individual is defeating the abuser. I think this is linked to the desire for rape/non-con roleplay that some survivors have, it can be therapeutic to imagine things having a different result.

I hope I've made sense here, it's not something I find easy to be articulate about, but it is something that I think needs mentioning on occasion.

* I personally prefer to term it "non-con" because for me some of the most scarring experiences in my life would not be able to be legally described as "rape". I don't intend to suggest that rape is not the terrible and serious thing that it is, but I would rather warn for non-con and so warn for wider range. In my eyes, it's a term that deserves serious consideration, but I do appreciate that it can seem to be, and be used as, a way of avoiding the issue
