I've concluded that the reason Hufflepuff got ignored was because Rowling never solidly defined it. In the first song, we get Brave House, Smart House, and "Cunning"(read: "evil" because it was a 2-dimensional kid's book and you always need a "bully") and Hufflepuff got "just and loyal and hard working".

Read the books in grade school, I had trouble understanding how "just and loyal" was different from "brave" because those two words usually follow "brave" in describing fairytale knights and "unafraid to toil" sounded like a throwaway compliment adults used (Anyone else feel like "S/he's a smart girl/boy" was like "have a nice day"? Something that adults automatically said? It has no meaning. If I'd heard an adult say "s/he's not very bright, but-" about anyone, maybe it would mean something. Everyone's smart in some pursuit.)

Also, I noticed that if you ask someone who barely knows you what house you should be in, they'll usually answer "Hufflepuff" because they don't know where to put you. So I just try to sort the houses as I would the zodiac. That would make Hufflepuff Virgo, Taurus, and Capricorn (earth). Even then, the fandom has me trained to think "oh, but Pisces and Cancer don't have it in them to be evil, so how could they be Slytherin?" which I really can't stand thinking.

Slytherin's not automatically "evil" and Hufflepuff isn't a "throwaway" house.

Slightly O.T: Hermione isn't necessarily smarter than anyone else- she's interested and well read. If after 12+ years of thinking magic wasn't real any devoted Harry Potter fan was sent to Hogwarts right now, they'd go right to the top of the class because they'd be reading their textbooks and trying every spell they could. Ron's not necessarily dumb. Magic just isn't a novelty for him.
