I always felt that the line, "Live too long" was Ten suddenly realizing what an ass he was being, both at the moment and throughout the last few episodes. I can forgive a whiny rant if it's followed by a reality check.

I think a lot of what happened during Ten's regeneration was due to guilt (and maybe a bit of cosmic punishment?) over the fact that he'd not regenerated when he was supposed to, back in The Stolen Earth. If he'd just regenerated then, he wouldn't have ended up having to wipe Donna's memories*, and I think he feels that rather acutely.

*Okay and the universe might've been destroyed by the reality bomb, IDK.
