Sounds like he may have much deeper behavioral problems, not necessarily exacerbated by the parents or punishment though. Spanking doesn't necessarily work all the time, but I still think it can be effective in some situations. It certainly isn't the holy grail of child discipline though.

But again I think the distinction needs to be made between abuse and spanking. I suppose what I used to get would be considered abuse nowadays (bruises), but I don't feel that way because even though I had a hard time with certain issues, I still feel like I was loved and cared for, but not coddled. But I'm lucky in that respect, other people are not so fortunate as that.

I agree with your post. I never did get any bruises since my parents' version of spanking was a simple hand-to-butt kind of thing.
