06. [SPOILERS for Once Upon a Time]

I dislike that he's paired with Belle mostly because I think Belle is an incredibly boring character. It makes me sad, since in the context of the Disney movies she's one of my favorite princesses, but in the series they're basically just using her to drive Rumplestiltskin's story further along. Boo.

There's a lot more of Rumplestiltskin/Gold being devious and delightful than there is of him being smitten with Belle. Don't cheat yourself, I say!

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't like Belle/Gold(Rumpel, whatever) - because, as the commenter said above, she's incredibly dull. HAVING SAID THAT Rumpel is by no means limited in his plots due to Belle. He has much more going for him than just that (and, the show tends to focus on his life before/after Belle, so you get a pretty decent cross-section of his delicious evilness). Keep watching - he is wonderful.

(Also is this really a spoiler? I watched the entire season in about three days so I've lost track about when everything was revealed.)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
lbr the show itself is incredibly dull

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
So do you ship Rumpelstiltskin with anyone, then? I mean, besides magic/evil. I think what makes me sad about this secret is that I always enjoy watching a villain struggle not to be one anymore and hopefully eventually succeed, and I think it's probable that Rumpelstiltskin won't. Then again, last season I would have said that about Regina, and it looks like the writers at least are giving her redemption a go. I'm the opposite of a lot of the people replying to this secret--I hate to see a villain who wallows in evil with no hope of redemption. Good vs. evil between two or more characters is always boring, to me, when compared with good vs. evil within one character.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I'm someone who loves evil characters to eventually find redemption by the end of their series, but I absolutely despise the whole "transformed because of the love of a good woman" cliche in general. That definitely turns me off to the pairing. In this case, having Belle be the catalyst for his redemption makes the whole thing seem...I dunno, insincere I guess. He would only want to act morally in order to keep Belle, instead of actually feeling regret for his actions.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm all for character development, I just don't want to see Rumple turn good because I would find it boring. Less evil, maybe, learning a few lessons, definitely, but ceasing to be the delightful, scheming imp he is? No way. There's a grey area between black and white and he should stay there, pure white is boring.

*shrugs* I don't ship him with anyone in the series, but I have a fic WIP with Rumple/OC pairing. (You have the permission to throw stones at me now.) I wasn't going to, but the idea wouldn't leave me alone so I thought it couldn't hurt. My OC is kind of... not a good guy herself, to put it lightly, which I personally find better for Rumple. And also for Belle, because she's a sweet girl and doesn't deserve to be treated like Rumple treats her.

And I ship Belle/Red on the side. Red could totally be her beast.

Okay, I actually like their romance and the way it's played, but I think what I like best is that he's still very much, "Look, I'm a lousy person, and no, I'm not really going to give my power up for you." He still loves her, but not enough for her to outrank what he's spent centuries to gain, and she loves him, but not enough to stay completely dependent on him in a relationship like that.

He and Belle are kind of on the outs right now - or at least on 'other stuff is more important for Gold right now'. You can keep on going and just fast forward through anything shippy. Rumple got a whole episode this season about his past without Belle.

I felt the same way. When you have a really great villain I don't always see the necessity for a pairing. But I've grown to like it. And anyway I only watch the show for shits and giggles, he's the only part I legitimately like.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I definitely understand where you're coming from. At first I liked the relationship with Belle, but in Season 2 I find it incredibly dull and irritating. Part of it is because Belle herself is bland (imo), and I can't see her character going anywhere other than to advance the plotlines of other characters. Also, I find her relationship with Gold to be MUCH less fun in Storybrook than her dynamic with him in the fairytale world. It's way to sweet and sappy. I seriously hope they find some way to permanently end their relationship; hopefully the revelation about Milah will be what's needed, but knowing Belle and the writers, probably not.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think Rumple is a great character but I'm glad I stopped watching if they've shipped him with Belle. Yuck!
PS - Can't anyone be devious and evil and just own it!?

[personal profile] iggy 2012-12-29 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like him with Belle because whoa stockholm syndrome and because I wish he could just be a devious, evil, complicated asshole. I hate that this show feels the need to woobify all of the major villains.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the Stockholm syndrome is pretty terrifying, it's one of the reasons I really don't like the pairing. Also Rumple is kind of abusive towards her.

And what the actual hell was it with Regina's back story? She lost her love because of Belle, I get it, but the whole forbidden love for a lower class boy plot is so cliche. I always thought that whatever made her bitter must have been way bigger than that.

If you want to watch the show, then watch it. Quitting because something happens in canon that you don't like is ... kinda petty. I mean, you gotta learn to overlook things or else you'll never be able to watch anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes things that happen in canon can ruin a show for you, though. If you're not enjoying it anymore, what's the point in watching?
velvet_mace: (Default)

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-12-29 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if she's not enjoying the show, she's not enjoying the show. She should stop. But if the reason she's stopped enjoying the show is because Rumplestiltskin is canonically paired with someone other than herself... in a show where just about everyone of age is paired off then gee wiz. It's hard to muster much sympathy for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Or she could just write self-insert fic and get it out of her system? I've never understood the impulse to be jealous of a fictional character to the point where someone stops watching/reading/playing the source material said character is from. It's not as though people who fall for fictional characters have a chance with them, unless they write fiction starring themselves opposite the object of their affections. They don't have to post it anywhere. I don't think even the most delusional fangirl (did the OP ever specify their gender?) actually expects the script-writers or show-runners to write them into the show. At least, I hope not.

This is kinda off topic, but I'm curious how you came to the conclusion that "just about everyone of age" is paired off. Even as a hyperbole, that's a bit of an odd statement to make; at the present time, Emma, Regina, Archie, Ruby, Victor, August, Jefferson, Mulan, Killian, Aurora, the Blue Fairy, George, and Cora are not paired off with anyone. Most were romantically involved with someone in the past, but those partners are either dead or missing. The only longstanding relationship on the show is Snow/Charming (and Ashley/Thomas, but they only appeared in, what, two episodes?).

I am someone who enjoys the pairing, and wants to see Rumpelstiltskin go through everything just because Robert Carlyle's acting is fucking awesome. But yeah, the part of me that wants to see him kick ass and be evil? Winning at the moment xD

I don't think for a minute we'll ever see them 'settle down' (and definitely not in the lovey-dovey romantic way) during the show - he's been so alone and so used to the magic and power for centuries that I can't ever see him (unless he finds Bae and still then I'm not sure) loosing his badass wicked side.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
He's just so delicious when he's evil, isn't he? ^^ And yeah, Carlyle is awesome.
