Slightly tangentially, I feel like the endgame romances in L. M. Montgomery's works are always a little boring, tbh. Gilbert did nothing for me, either.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:27 am (UTC)(link)more Emily-Dean relationship spoilers
I was just rereading A Tangled Web today. Jealousy is a strand in so many of Montgomery's stories. Plus the idea that the love for a house is the kind of love that won't disappoint you.

Emily/Teddy is my OTP, but as characters, well, Dean is a realistic character and Teddy is a fantasy. Teddy isn't interesting without Emily, but Dean could have a book of his own.
There was an Emily anime a couple of years ago - it's mostly good, but Dean is only in one episode, which surprised me because it's not like age-difference storylines are unknown in anime.

"I have been reading three books Dean lent me this week. One was like a rose garden--very pleasant, but just a little too sweet. And one was like a pine wood on a mountain--full of balsam and tang--I loved it, and yet it filled me with a sort of despair. It was written so beautifully--I can never write like that, I feel sure. And one--it was just like a pigsty. Dean gave me that one by mistake. He was very angry with himself when he found it out--angry and distressed.
"'Star--Star--I would never have given you a book like that--my confounded carelessness--forgive me. That book is a faithful picture of one world--but not your world, thank God--nor any world you will ever be a citizen of. Star, promise me you will forget that book.'
"'I'll forget it if I can,' I said.
"But I don't know if I can. It was so ugly. I have not been so happy since I read it. I feel as if my hands were soiled somehow and I couldn't wash them clean. And I have another queer feeling, as if some gate had been shut behind me, shutting me into a new world I don't quite understand or like, but through which I must travel."
[A Rebours, Madame Bovary, something French? oh, what book could it be?]

The Blue Castle has my favorite hero now, but ranking-wise, I still prefer the Emily books over the Anne books. Ilse. I love Ilse.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 06:21 am (UTC)(link)And I love the fact that she and her best friend have big dramatic arguments frequently and get over them quickly, that Emily is more focused on her writing than anything else, that there is a faint and flavorful hint of the supernatural.
Her relationship with Dean is interesting, in that Gothic novel way, but I could never forgive him for the burning of her first novella. Teddy is a bit dull but they understand each other and compliment each other.
The Blue Castle is still my favorite book though. I reread that sucker almost twice a year. <3
