If I had fic recs, I'd hand them over. As it is, I'll def. be watching to see if enough people actually write it for you to get anything--out of curiosity, mostly.

Slightly tangentially, I feel like the endgame romances in L. M. Montgomery's works are always a little boring, tbh. Gilbert did nothing for me, either.

Ugh, agreed about Gilbert. Roy was way sexier, she should've stopped halfway through Of The Island.

Gilbert was just so dull! It's been a while since I read the books, but I can't remember a single major suitor of Anne's, offhand, who wouldn't have been an improvement.

The Blue Castle is the only one I care for.

A+. The love interest in Blue Castle is a genuinely interesting guy.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know what you mean. Just about all the romantic possibilities for Anne were extremely dull. Gilbert doesn't have much of a personality after their childhood clashes, Roy is just sort of a cardboard cut-out of the Perfect Guy, etc. The only one that seemed mildly interesting was the guy who was one of her students' fathers, whose name I can't even remember now.

I never heard about this book but thanks wikipedia I can say it sounds horrible. But I think I would ship these two. It sounds more interesting than the end pairing. But idk maybe I would think different if I read this book. First I also didn't like Gilbert but after I read the books I started to ship Gilbert/Anne hardcore.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
The whole trilogy is very good, actually. It's reminiscent of the Anne series, but with more of a focus on the heroine becoming a writer.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm maybe I will check out the books.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, when I was reading those as a kid, I remember thinking Teddy was so romantic. Then from about twelve on I started liking him less and less and Dean more and more. Probably started off my age kink. There's so much wrong with Dean, and I'm so uncomfortable with so much of what he does, but he's still so much better suited to Emily than Teddy is.

The OTP is Emily/Writing anyway. Though I agree that Teddy is dreadfully dull.

how does the age gap factor into how abusive their relationship was? (unless you mean that the woman was under the age of consent)

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
If you haven't read the books, they meet when she's about 12 or so (I think; it's been a while) and he rescues her from falling off a ledge to her death. Then he tells her that her life belongs to him, and despite the bizarreness of this statement they still become friends, and when she grows up he tries to claim his "debt" by getting her to marry him, only she eventually breaks the engagement because she loves her friend Teddy more. This gets Dean really upset, but he lets her go because I don't remember why, and frankly I was too relieved that he did to really pay attention to it. I hated their relationship because it seemed really dub-con-ish to me.

more Emily-Dean relationship spoilers

There was also the jealousy. He thought her writing would take her away from him, so he told her it wasn't good. She trusts his word and burns her first novel because of his opinion.

I was just rereading A Tangled Web today. Jealousy is a strand in so many of Montgomery's stories. Plus the idea that the love for a house is the kind of love that won't disappoint you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
It's a really BIG age gap, as I recall. When they first meet, he's an adult and she's a kid, and he fixates on her in a weird way. Nothing sexual in nature ever happens, but the power imbalance is off the charts.

But Teddy is pretty and sad and artistic and SOULMATES while Dean gives porn to little girls.

Emily/Teddy is my OTP, but as characters, well, Dean is a realistic character and Teddy is a fantasy. Teddy isn't interesting without Emily, but Dean could have a book of his own.

There was an Emily anime a couple of years ago - it's mostly good, but Dean is only in one episode, which surprised me because it's not like age-difference storylines are unknown in anime.

... porn? I do not remember that part of the book?

from Emily Climbs
"I have been reading three books Dean lent me this week. One was like a rose garden--very pleasant, but just a little too sweet. And one was like a pine wood on a mountain--full of balsam and tang--I loved it, and yet it filled me with a sort of despair. It was written so beautifully--I can never write like that, I feel sure. And one--it was just like a pigsty. Dean gave me that one by mistake. He was very angry with himself when he found it out--angry and distressed.

"'Star--Star--I would never have given you a book like that--my confounded carelessness--forgive me. That book is a faithful picture of one world--but not your world, thank God--nor any world you will ever be a citizen of. Star, promise me you will forget that book.'

"'I'll forget it if I can,' I said.

"But I don't know if I can. It was so ugly. I have not been so happy since I read it. I feel as if my hands were soiled somehow and I couldn't wash them clean. And I have another queer feeling, as if some gate had been shut behind me, shutting me into a new world I don't quite understand or like, but through which I must travel."

[A Rebours, Madame Bovary, something French? oh, what book could it be?]

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
So... not actually porn but probably some book that'd be considered tame by modern standards. NGL, I feel kind of let down.

Oh lord, I was all about the Dean/Emily. I over-identified with Emily and so wanted a Tragically Beautiful older guy to see me for the special creature I was and sweep me off into a life of traveling and lots of gazing longingly at beautiful twilight scenes.

The Blue Castle has my favorite hero now, but ranking-wise, I still prefer the Emily books over the Anne books. Ilse. I love Ilse.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Great series! I like the sweetness of the Anne series too, but Emily is just so much more Gothic.

And I love the fact that she and her best friend have big dramatic arguments frequently and get over them quickly, that Emily is more focused on her writing than anything else, that there is a faint and flavorful hint of the supernatural.

Her relationship with Dean is interesting, in that Gothic novel way, but I could never forgive him for the burning of her first novella. Teddy is a bit dull but they understand each other and compliment each other.

The Blue Castle is still my favorite book though. I reread that sucker almost twice a year. <3

No fic recs?

I was a hardcore Dean/Emily shipper as a kid so I've been lurking on this thread hoping someone would have some. Bueller? :(
