how does the age gap factor into how abusive their relationship was? (unless you mean that the woman was under the age of consent)

If you haven't read the books, they meet when she's about 12 or so (I think; it's been a while) and he rescues her from falling off a ledge to her death. Then he tells her that her life belongs to him, and despite the bizarreness of this statement they still become friends, and when she grows up he tries to claim his "debt" by getting her to marry him, only she eventually breaks the engagement because she loves her friend Teddy more. This gets Dean really upset, but he lets her go because I don't remember why, and frankly I was too relieved that he did to really pay attention to it. I hated their relationship because it seemed really dub-con-ish to me.

There was also the jealousy. He thought her writing would take her away from him, so he told her it wasn't good. She trusts his word and burns her first novel because of his opinion.

I was just rereading A Tangled Web today. Jealousy is a strand in so many of Montgomery's stories. Plus the idea that the love for a house is the kind of love that won't disappoint you.

It's a really BIG age gap, as I recall. When they first meet, he's an adult and she's a kid, and he fixates on her in a weird way. Nothing sexual in nature ever happens, but the power imbalance is off the charts.
