I'm really, truly sorry that happened to you--all of it. The fact that so many people defended the author is just bullshit. "Angst" is not a blanket tag that can be seen as covering every form of graphic content. I hope you've since found other fandoms that you love just as much (or more!) and that aren't populated by clueless jerks.

As someone who's been there, I can tell you that it is possible to realise you've suppressed memories. I'm so sorry that happened to you - not just the abuse, but the story bringing it back.

Somehow I feel like this was likely a Kakashi/Iruka fic...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
not a small(ish) fandom

I've seen way too many a fic with that sort of fucked up premise and conclusion/goal/skewed perception of "love" and what is a healthy sensuality, though

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
Preach. There is a right way to do a long term, slow build budding feelings into romance....and then there's the wrong way. And then there's the really fucked up way. Unfortunately most authors mistake the second and third for the first.

I have hit the back button on so many romantic fics because of poorly conceived to just plain disturbing notions of romance. All without the slightest awareness or acknowledgement of the problematic nature of the relationship or actions of the participants.

I really don't think most authors realize that consent can be really and truly hot to read. I know it's a personal preference, but I can't be the only one.

ayrt

I dunno if it's just me, but when I was younger (teenage years), dub-con and non-con and the type of fic were talking about were right up my alley, while more straightforward consent-ful types were boring

it wasn't until I got a better understanding of... well, a lot of things, that I couldn't read that sort of fic any more

whatever sort of filter I read them through, it just wasn't there any more

now I try to read them and they just make me feel uncomfortable at best, a little sick at best

I- I can't say I blame people who like those fics, but I do hope that they too learn how consent is awesome too, even if it's just fic

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
same anon

and I especially hope that the people writing those fics that -through reading said fics- obviously don't realize how fucked up the "rape is love" trend is uh realize that it's not cool

I've quit reading so many fics because abuse was treated as some perfectly acceptable, borderline romantic thing. Going by your secret, I suppose the author didn't warn for sexual abuse? That's shit, OP. I wish that hadn't happened to you and I'm sorry you're having to deal with the fallout now. D:

I feel like someone should've at least commented asking the OP to put up warnings...

I hope this doesn't discourage you to stay away from fandom altogether, but I would completely understand if it did. If you do get into another fandom, I hope you have better luck.

+1

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry, OP. :

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks. That really sucks, and I'm sorry it happened to you.

I'm in a kind of insular corner of a larger fandom, and yeah. It's really hard to avoid some stuff, even if the person writing it isn't being actively malicious. I wish your friends could've been more supportive of you.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
First of all, I'm sorry you were triggered, and I hope you get the help you need to heal and cope ... but nonny, what the hell were you doing reading on after the point you got triggered? And why did you give up on the fandom because of one fic?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
The way I read it, OP was upset when the trigger part came into it, but could still cope; then she realized that the triggering event wasn't being treated as something traumatic that the character would need to recover from, but an acceptable stepping-stone to setting up a romance. I can see how that would send her into a much bigger tailspin. Possibly to the point of leaving the fandom, if the author is a BNF she couldn't avoid.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
IT sucks, yeah, but if you didn't know that you could be triggered (suppressed memories?) how was the author to know something about you that you yourself didn't?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
There isn't an expectation for the author to be psychic. However, there is an expectation for the author to post warnings like "underage sexual content" or "sexual coercion"/"dubious consent aka dub-con"/whatever the hell you want to call it rather than piling that all under "agnst." At least proper warning like that may have raised some red flags so that even if OP didn't fully dredge up those memories, there may still have been a general feeling of "do not want" to prevent reading the story.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Putting sexual abuse under a general warning for "angst" is inappropriate. Assuming the author wasn't trying to hurt people, I'd suspect they don't interpret what they wrote as being that severe.

Which ... can be a sign that your fic author is an abuse survivor, especially if what they wrote was realistic enough to connect with things that actually happened to you. IME, most fic written by people who are unimaginatively throwing in *the worst angst they can think of* is as harmless as it is boring, even when rape and dubcon is had.

I was with you right up until you started complaining about the end of the fic. I understand that it was infuriating, painful, and not what you needed to be reading. But it may still have been what the author needed to be writing. Fandom as a whole is very sympathetic to the idea that certain kinds of fucked-up romances should not exist, or should be hidden behind a thick wall of "I, the writer, recognize this is completely problematic and wrong." You'll find lots of people who feel that way. But to some of us, stories like that feel like a deep tissue massage. They hurt, but afterward, we hurt less. So I really want a solution were you don't have to read bad-for-you!thing and I don't have to give up good-for-me!thing.

I have no idea which fandom this secret refers to, and chances are, I'm not in it. So I'm not defending the particular story. It's just that this dynamic (attacking a fanfic writer because they wrote something dark and triggering, and the community taking sides based on who they'd rather not do without) has come up before, and regardless of who wins, I think it's a power struggle that shouldn't exist. You shouldn't have felt like you had to leave the fandom. But the fandom shouldn't have felt like they had to defend the story to you, because not doing so would mean it was badwrong and so was the author. Because it was fought along those lines, it sounds like everyone lost.

I don't think an "angst" tag even begins to fucking cover some of the topics that were mentioned in that story.
