I've been trying to read the book after loving (one of the?) the movie, but keep getting a little turned off by how sociopathic Mary is. Does she get better?

Her getting better is the main arc of the story, and the character development of her is really well-done IMO. :)

Yes, she does get better! And there is more than one movie. I'm assuming you watched the one from the 90's? Anyway, a big part of the story is Mary changing along-side Colin :)
