Works of fiction that you adore but don't know why-

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I love the Secret Garden to pieces. I've read the book and watched tons of film/mini-series adaptions. I'm not quite sure why I enjoy it so much. I know that the beginning has some heavily racist undertones (Or blatantly racist dialogue) I know it's a product of its' time, but that would normally turn me off the story. For some reason I don't mind it here. :X

So F!S, is there anything you adore that you normally would not?

I've been trying to read the book after loving (one of the?) the movie, but keep getting a little turned off by how sociopathic Mary is. Does she get better?

da

Definitely! That's the biggest point of the story.

Oh, thank goodness! I shall soldier on, then.

Her getting better is the main arc of the story, and the character development of her is really well-done IMO. :)

I'm convinced now. :o

Yes, she does get better! And there is more than one movie. I'm assuming you watched the one from the 90's? Anyway, a big part of the story is Mary changing along-side Colin :)

That's the one! I'm glad to know this.

I can't think of anything I adore that's significantly out of my usual millieu offhand. However, at a con a few years back, I got a free Linnea Sinclair sci-fi romance novel (Blanking on the name at the moment, and I donated it to Goodwill a couple moves ago). Normally, I hate romance novels. I actually quite like romantic subplots in my fiction, but only once the characters are established, and not as the main plot of the narrative. If the main force of the narrative is romantic entanglements, and that's the only real source of character development, I get bored. For some reason, I actually really liked this book, though. Enough to reread at least once, and for the life of me, I can't quite be sure why. It probably helped that the heroine was pretty solidly active throughout the book, rather than falling for the hero and becoming more of a Macguffin than a character.

I like Neuromancer by William Gibson. I don't. know. why. and it pisses me off a little bit.

I like it, too.

For me, it's the writing. He's written better stuff since, but I still have a soft spot for Neuromancer.

I can see that. I haven't actually read any of his other stuff but I know I should.

!!?

I adore Neuromancer. Actually, i love all his stuff. That particular genre is something i just *love*. I've read that whole 'series' - for lack of a better word - several times.

I actually really like the genre too. I like his world. I think my problem may have something to do with liking the story but having a love/hate relationship with all of the characters, particularly Case and Molly. The writing was really smooth for me. I got through it very quickly. But there's one thing that just niggles and bothers me. I don't know what it is but there's something telling me I really shouldn't like it even though I do. I can't blame it all on how I view the characters. I don't know.

*shrug*

I have a bizarrely strong love for Edward Eager that goes beyond "well, his stories are fun!" I just looooooove his books for reasons I'm not entirely sure of.

Wing Commander, the movie. It's terrible even by my usual awful movie-watching standards. It's cliché. It's cheesy. It fucks up just about everything from the games. And yet, I still love the hell out of it, for some reason. I have a VHS of it, even, and if I ever see a cheap DVD of it when I'm out I'll probably get it. I do not know why. I just know I will.

I'm really enjoying the "Tiffany Aching" sub-series of Discworld, even though it's supposed to be for a younger audience. (Not to say that that's a bad thing, but I went into the series expecting simpler writing and less sarcasm.) They give me a strong sense of nostalgia, and I can't really pinpoint why.

Princess Ai.

The story is terrible self-insert fiction at its worst. It's not very well-paced, the main character is the Mary Sue to end all Mary Sues, the dialogue is clunky, the worldbuilding is poor and rushed, and it's basically fanfiction written by Courtney Love herself.

Buuuuuuuuut despite how utterly terrible it is, I can't help but love it. It's just cute, sugary fun.

(And I've discussed my love for Degrassi before, too. I can't stand any other teen show, but I fucking adore Degrassi.)

JUST came here to say Degrassi. I have this huge whump/h/c thing for Degrassi, it just feeds my id so freaking wonderfully. All my Canadian friends mock me, because everyone knows the NEW Degrassi is highly inferior.

Also, Zero Punctuation icons ftw.

I love ALL the Degrassi! It's all pretty terrible, but it has its own unique breed of dumbfuckery, and you can't help but love it.

Oh god, Degrassi. That ranks up there with Gossip Girl in terms of things that I just sit there going "BUT WHY DO I LIKE THIS" the whole time I'm watching them. And yet, THEY ARE SO FUCKING ADDICTIVE.

For some reason, I've never been able to get into any other teen show, but I've been glued to Degrassi since I was 12 or 13 myself.

...Man, I feel old now.

Lex Trent vs the Gods, a YA fantasy book. The story is average, though the world is pretty cool - but by god is the main character a douche. It surprised me just how douchey he was - usually if the hero of a book is a jerk, they're the nicer variety of jerk, or at least get better. He's just an awful human being. I couldn't stop reading.

(Which reminds me - note to self, track down the second book in the series. Maybe he'll get better then.)

Mad Men. I do kind of generally have a thing for asshole characters, so I guess it's not totally out of character, but I feel like watching dudes that work in an ad agency live out their dude-style soap opera should not be interesting (especially with all the sexism, even if it is period-accurate), and yet...
