Did Genghis Khan ride on the backs of dragons and dodge ice zombies too?

The issue isn't whether or not it's "realistic" (which people tend to way overstate and I highly doubt most of the people who make these claims as if they're undeniable truths are history majors), it's the way GRRM delights in writing about it. I can practically see the perverted old man grin when he writes the 500th passage about how "small, perky breasts" and how WHAT IF SANSA GOT RAPED. There is a way to handle these things intelligently and to unpack them, but GRRM never does.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you think GRRM gets off to writing about Sansa almost getting raped then you're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you think he doesn't?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Because there's nothing to suggest that he does aside from people who automatically assume the worst?

Everything bad that happens to Sansa is to make the reader empathize with her plight.

Go read his blog...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
I've read his blog. Did he have some rape fantasy about Sansa Stark that I missed?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. As well as an epic whine fit about Dany not being cast young or hot enough. Dude is creepy.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna need a link as I never saw such a thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I never saw such a thing either. Sounds like you're full of bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Not only on the threat of her being raped, but on her being passed around from dude to dude and constantly being salivated over. Even Tyrion, GRRM and fandom's favorite, is heralded as some big-hearted hero because he decided not to rape her.

It's obvious to me when I read Sansa and Dany's chapters that GRRM fetishizes the hell out of them. I don't see how anyone can come to any other conclusion from the way he writes about them. -shrug-

Maybe because we're not Anita Sarkeesian?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I think you need to read more intelligent authors and you'll pick up the difference between someone who writes about sexual abuse as titillating/exciting and someone who actually analyzes its implications and ramifications.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Show me examples of where Sansa's abuse was meant to be titillating and not horrific. I'm waiting.

The entire Blackwater scene with Sandor. Sandor's creepy obsession with her is constantly written as if he's a just a smitten 12-year-old and it's just so sweet that he has a crush on the pretty girl in class.

I gave away books 1 and 2 so I can't get them out and type an actual passage, but the eroticizing language he uses in these types of scenes bothers me as well. The phrase "small, perky breasts" recurs a LOT.

I have no idea what you were reading, then. Even the most ardent Sansan shipper would never characterize Sandor's behavior towards Sansa during Blackwater as being "sweet". Sandor was written to be pretty scary in that scene.

No, that's the weirdo Sansan shippers. Don't confuse canon with fandom.

Pretty much every character's interest in Sansa is presented as a character flaw. Tyrion is a sad and needy "starving child," looking for affection in all the wrong places, trying desperately to re-create his one childhood romance. Dontos is a slobbery, stupid, untrustworthy drunk. Petyr is a replacement-goldfish-lusting, untrustworthy, creepy bastard and Sandor is a maladjusted weirdo with serious anger issues. That's the point. It's taking the "Fair young, naive and pure maiden" trope and taking a cynical look at just what sorts of men would be interested in that.

He called Dany and Drogo's wedding night "romantic".

He said that he still pictures his characters as he originally imagined them, not as the series portrayed them. When asked what character he would like to meet the most, he said Dany because she's hot - talking about a 13-15 year old here.

This is the kind of mindset he has.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I'm baffled that anyone thinks GRRM has the intelligence or maturity to actually examine all the sexual abuse he writes about. The guy just wants to talk about young girls' titties.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
hasn't read the books disclaimer

he also supposedly described one female character in her thirties as if she were a wrinkled, unsexy old woman, so he likes them young

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not a realistic fantasy world. Just because he doesn't pack a ton of politically correct moral righteousness into denouncing rape in a world where it's pretty much established as at least being something unpleasant but to be expected under certain craptastic circumstances, doesn't fucking mean he delights in writing about it. It just means he's not treating the reader like a moron. In the west (and, in some parts of the world, they still do) it used to be that girls as young as twelve and thirteen got married, were raped (or was it marital sex? We think of it as rape, but this perspective has obviously changed over time), and so on and so forth. Which Borgia was it that got married at like, thirteen? I think it was Lucrezia. I don't watch the TV show. GoT world? It's craptastic.

ayrt

I don't expect him to condemn rape at every turn, I just expect him to handle it with a modicum of intelligence, insight, and examination, which he doesn't. He can give Jaime a great arc and interesting character development just from having his fucking hand cut off, but he can't be arsed to deal with the ramifications of all the sexual abuse he loves to write about.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
He's writing a fucking fantasy series, for God's sake, I don't think he's required to add an addendum on the horrors of sexual abuse every time a character ends up coming close to getting raped. Do you also want him to add deep, insightful passages every time a character get murdered, or every time a child gets beaten, or even time an animal gets tortured? Every time someone does something racist, or homophobic? Why are you ONLY complaining about OMG WHY DOESN'T HE WRITE LESS ABOUT RAPE OR AT LEAST MAKE IT OBVIOUS HOW AWFUL RAPE IS DURING THE STORYLINE?
