This series does suck

I don't mind rape (though equal opportunity rape is nicer, more dudes please) and I don't mind violence, I like fantasy, I've got a tough stomach, etc.

But this series doesn't strike me as clever, deep or exciting. It seems like the author made a list of every "lol taboo" thing to try to make people uncomfortable, and strung them together into a sort-of-plot. I actually could make a checklist. Incest? Check. Rape? Check. (More rape? check) Cannibalism? Yep! Torture porn? Uh-huh! More people dying in horrible ways? Mom breastfeeding big child? More torture? More rape? Check? I'm sorry, but this shit is fucking stupid and is about as thrilling and clever as a Saw movie.

In addition to that, all the characters are bad people, excusing maybe the kids because kids. There were NO characters I liked or wanted to cheer for. I'm all for gray characters, realistic, whatever. But when I'm hoping the conclusion will have something to do with a weapon of mass destruction?

I wish I knew why this series was popular. There's so much better shit out there.

Everyone goes on about how innovative and intelligent this series is, because he kills off the hero (Hello every Shakespeare tragedy) and there's incest (OH HAI ARTHURIAN LEGEND). There's nothing new or innovative or thoughtful or deep about this series, it's for dumb people who want to pretend to be thoughtful and deep and I hate it.

I could not agree with you more about the characters. I love grey-morality and characters that fall into that category, but none of the characters in the series were compelling enough to make me stick around. I love reading dystopian fiction, too, so I'm all for fucked up worlds, but in this series it felt more like the author was trying to make the world the awfulest awful to ever awful because that meant it would be edgy and dark and therefore good. I just can't get down with awful for its own sake (or for "realism").
