The fact that this series is so rapey is the reason I've never watched it, despite many friends and family members telling me it's right up my alley. And it is, it has Sean Bean and swordfighting, 2 of my favorite things. But not all the rape. I'll pass and just rewatch LoTR when I need a Sean Bean/Swordfighting fix.

Maybe because we're not a bunch of wet blankets? Yes Westeros is a crapsack world. That hardly means GRRM "trivializes" rape and the characters that do engage in such activities are not the heroes.

I'm okay with fiction containing all of the elements that you mention, and even enjoy them a lot of times. What bothers me about this series, specifically, is that a lot of the fans that I've encountered like to go "NO YOU JUST DON'T GET IT. IT'S ACCURATE FOR THE PERIOD." when anyone brings up that things like the blatant racism, misogyny, rape, violence, etc. bother them.

It's also accurate for that type of setting for a lot of the characters to have rotten teeth and be covered in fleas and horse shit, but you don't see people bitching when details like that aren't included. Enjoying the series is fine, but don't act like people who point this shit out are just being obtuse or overlooking GRRM's enlightened brilliance. It's fantasy and, more importantly, fiction. He didn't have to bring in any of those elements, he chose to. And it's okay to chose that, but don't act like those things are a requirement for a good story.

Can someone tell me when all this rape supposedly happened (ON THE SHOW, not the books)? The way people act it's like 45 minutes of an hour long show is just a series of scenes of rape.

Well, I'd argue that yes, there is rape, but GRRM doesn't go into gratuitous detail, shoehorn it in unnecessarily, or try to justify it. It's a Very Bad Thing that sometimes happens in civil wars and other shitty places, along with other warcrimes, looting, torture and lack of civil rights and due process.

That's not to say that you can't find horrible neckbeard fans who range from rape apologists to outright rape enthusiasts, but the books themselves aren't that way.

As to ripping of the war of the roses... I'm not sure "ripping off" is the right word when it's history and not fiction. But I suppose my argument is that it's an homage

I have no problems with that, since it feels realistic. And I don't think GRRM is glorifying Westeros at all. He knows it's got a lot of problems and he shows that in his writing.

Warning: There's no spoilers in this, but I'll talk about the book series and mention characters that haven't been on the show yet.

Others have already commented, but ... I've read the entire series and I don't think it's any of these things.

Yeah, the society that ASOIAF is set in is patriarchalic, but it's also portrayed to be falling apart horribly because of it, among other things. Rape isn't trivialized, it's often trivial to the people who live in that world, and that purposely makes it seem worse, imo. It's not described as a good thing, and characters who suffer rape are always portrayed sympathetically.

I also always felt that ASOIAF has too many varied, interesting female characters to be misogynistic. Characters like Sansa, Arya, Dany, Asha, and others have their own agendas and experience their own character development, and there's great secondary female characters like the Queen Of Thorns and Osha. I mean, yeah, there's definitely some gross fetishizing going on with some of the heroines, and I get if people take offense with that, but imo the mostly interesting arcs the characters have cancels that out.

Yeah... I, too, was called a "wet blanket" by the person who recommended ASoIAF to me after I read the first book and decided not to continue the series or watch the show... All the same arguments that are listed here ("It was accurate for the time," "It's a crapsack world for everyone," "Yeah there's rape but it's never shown as a good thing") were presented to me but, goddamnit, I don't care. This is not the series for me. I figured that out the moment they threw a small child out a window. Yeah, you can shed a negative light on child-murder all you'd like, and you can put it in the context of a crapsack world where that kind of thing is commonplace, I still don't care. I don't want to read it and so don't call me a "wet blanket" for avoiding it or continuously try to show me what makes the rest of the series so awesome. Have your fun, but I really don't want to play.

Anyway, I personally don't know how much the rest of the series trivializes rape (like I said, I only read the first book) but it doesn't surprise me. I found it really awkward how Dany's sexual relationship with her husband was handled.... It was like the author was trying to say, "It's rape until she starts to like it." WTF. So yeah, this series is not for me. You're not alone, OP.

The rape in the very first episode nearly made me stop watching. Because in the books? That scene is consensual, or at least seems to be so. He doesn't bend her over and pull her hands away and growl "no" and stip her, she unbraids his hair and he strokes her and asks "No ...?" and she doesn't tell him to stop.

But yeah, all the rape puts me right off. Thankfully the sex scenes in S2 are primarily for character development rather than Rape As Drama or Woooo We Are HBO Look At All The TITS.

I actually kinda prefer The Borgias to Game of Thrones. I mean, I enjoy Game of Thrones, but I prefer The Borgias. And at least on The Borgias the marital rape is treated as an absolutely horrifying torturous thing there is no coming back from, and the only other instance of rape I can think of is to demonstrate how unhinged and obsessive a character has become (he's basically on a self-destructive kick at that point, the attempted rape is followed by threatening-to-kill-his-infant-nephew and a drug addiction.)

While it didn't make me dislike the books, this is actually exactly what I thought for the first... oh... two and a half or so?

I don't know if it was intentional on the author's part, or whether he became more "enlightened" over the time it took him to write these things, but to me, the first half or so of the series has these undertones to it that made me very sincerely wonder whether GRRM actually was some kind of misogynist pedophile pervert with a lot of very unusual fetishes, while the later books give female and underaged characters a lot more empowerment and make them seen a lot more likable. Cercei especially became pretty much my favourite character in the series, while yet other characters who seemed to have been given a lion's share of dickishness get what's coming to them in a way that makes them not just tolerable, but kind of sympathetic.

Don't know if this was by accident or by design, but that weirdly uncomfortable over-abundance of victimization of women and children does seem to even out a lot.
