The "it's realistic!" defense bothers me because, in order to offer a "realistic" portrayal of Western European Middle Ages, dude created an alternative universe where there is no Christianity or Islam and a setting that has NOTHING to do with Europe (both in geography and climate). But rape scenes or threats and malegazey descriptions of 13 y.o. girls are needed for realism?... okay, then.

Rapes? Yeah, absolutely needed for realism because those things really happened in the middle ages.

Pogroms? No no, much too nasty, not to mention political. We'll just leave those out.

Ugh, yep. I noticed this particular bit of hypocrisy. I know that geeks find realistic portrayals of religion uncomfortable (and rightly so, as many of them are atheists, which the US population considers less trustworthy than rapists - this is a form of discrimination with which they can actually identify) so they have a milder, toned down, magical fantasy version that is either relegated to the background when it would have been at the forefront of every political decision (e.g. worship of the Seven) or fetishized and make sexy (e.g. Melisandre).

But, uh, doing the same with the portrayal of sexism would just be UNACCEPTABLE. For... reasons.

Actually, I think it's the opposite: religious groups (who can take offense on how you picture their systems of beliefs) are taken seriously and have influence in our society. But the people who take issues with graphic descriptions of rape can be ignored and made fun of as hysterical feminazi sjws (as a good part of this thread shows) or wet blankets who don't have the stomach for daring fiction. So yeah, Martin's brand of "gritty realism" is quite safe and comfortable...

Yeah, you might well right. Historically accurate violence against women? Perfectly fine. Historically accurate inter-religious or inter-ethnic violence? Controversy. Real controversy.

Fucking THIS

>have you ever read medieval books?

Yes, have you? Apparently not, because I don't see anyone making points of the involvement of religion in the books.

Everyone is missing one huge historical fact that the Church, as awful as it was, actually banned warfare on a good number of days of the year.

They also miss the lack of involvement of commerce in asoiaf, merchant guilds, and the power they weilded, plus the fact that many wars were based on the desire for gold and opening trade routes.

but raperaperaperaperape is ALWAYS a guarenteed hit for surefire historical accuracy. Wanna write something medievel? Throw some rape in there, it will make it authentic. Add some dirt, grime, and some bloody war, and you got the perfect medieval society.

I wonder about the "it's realistic" argument. Rape has been a very real threat for women, children and men throughout all of human history. People get raped every day NOW - should authors of stories set in modern times add rape in order for it to be more "realistic"?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
well, 9 times out of 10 when media set in the present portraits rape it's praised for its realism, so...

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
...yes?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right. And he definitely doesn't replace those religions with OTHER religions that people fight over, either.

Oh, wait..

Nowhere near the kind of scale on which it actually happened, and missing the many other grotesque aspects that powerful organized religion truly had back then. He's toned it down for his audience, which makes umbrage over people asking him to tone down misogyny hypocritical in the extreme.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
No offense, but this is a lazy ass argument, since:

- great Monotheisms (and also the legacy of classical culture) shaped Medieval mentality and culture. You know, the one he aims to portray

- the Chruch was a force to be reckoned with in Medieval politics.Nothing in his books is comparable to it

-the choice of replacing complex systems of belief with cartoonish stuff about sexy priestesses and shadows monster really makes his approach look lazy and sensationalistic.

Again, it's fine if people enjoy it, but please, don't try to act like this dude is a rigorous scholar of the Medieval world. It's not like he's Umberto Eco ( who knows his stuff AND can write entertaining plots)
