Rapes? Yeah, absolutely needed for realism because those things really happened in the middle ages.

Pogroms? No no, much too nasty, not to mention political. We'll just leave those out.

Ugh, yep. I noticed this particular bit of hypocrisy. I know that geeks find realistic portrayals of religion uncomfortable (and rightly so, as many of them are atheists, which the US population considers less trustworthy than rapists - this is a form of discrimination with which they can actually identify) so they have a milder, toned down, magical fantasy version that is either relegated to the background when it would have been at the forefront of every political decision (e.g. worship of the Seven) or fetishized and make sexy (e.g. Melisandre).

But, uh, doing the same with the portrayal of sexism would just be UNACCEPTABLE. For... reasons.

Actually, I think it's the opposite: religious groups (who can take offense on how you picture their systems of beliefs) are taken seriously and have influence in our society. But the people who take issues with graphic descriptions of rape can be ignored and made fun of as hysterical feminazi sjws (as a good part of this thread shows) or wet blankets who don't have the stomach for daring fiction. So yeah, Martin's brand of "gritty realism" is quite safe and comfortable...

Yeah, you might well right. Historically accurate violence against women? Perfectly fine. Historically accurate inter-religious or inter-ethnic violence? Controversy. Real controversy.
