Name five gratuitous rape scenes in the first book.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I'll list a few from the second book because that is the one I reading right now.

The women who were pilloried in punishment for consorting with the enemy. They are shaven and naked, and the men can take them at leisure.

Theon Greyjoy, that's quite a list right there. The miller's wife, that stands out in my mind.

The noble woman's mentally challenged daughter who was lost in the riot and was gang raped, now pregnant. Why could she not have simply hid somewhere terrified?

Arya being threatened by woman with splitered broomstick...

Reek demanding his choice of a woman returning with more men for Greyjoy.

Cersie obsessing with the fact

There's more that anyone can read.

It's not so much that rape is in the stories, because it is a realistic fact in a gritty world. It's that it is somewhat overdone, I feel, as a background device. It also strikes me as odd that there are no midwives with knowledge of women's bodies in this world, or I haven't come across them yet.

I don't even count the Drogo and Daenerys scene because it is part of the story, and GRRM is conscentious of how he handled that. I mean, Dany's wedding night was no worst than the wedding nights of a lot of other women in the books. It strikes me that GRRM spares the major female characters from rape, and that is so much better than a lot of writers I have seen, but the numbers of the background female characters, yeah, while it really doesn't bother me so much, I don't blame anyone for being uncomfortable with it.

DA

Well, having had my fill of this kind of shit with Terry Goodkind's writing I'm glad I never got into GRRM's stuff. I don't care if it's 'gritty' and 'realistic', mass background raping is not my kind of entertainment and makes me suspect creepy author fetishization to boot.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Mass background raping is not realistic for even most war themes, and medieval themes. Realistically there are going to be a number of men who do not rape because of vows of chastity, faithfulness to betrothed/wives, and just for decency's sake.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
HA HAHAHA HAHAHAHA wait I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or if that's what you actually think.

Doesn't matter what the mass background rape is or isn't objectively, I don't find that kind of thing entertaining and that's the line in the sand for me.

Some, sure. But that doesn't mean they'll stop all of their comrades that aren't.

God I hate this. The guys who watch are being turned on and evidently there are a lot of 50 Shades women out there watching too.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
It is creepy.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Damn straight I get off to it. Nothing gets me harder than reading about Gregor raping someone after bashing some babies' heads into the wall. Oh god, I think I just jizzed myself thinking. UNF.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I said ACTUAL rape scenes, not mentions of rape. There's a difference.

Thanks for proving my point.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
*eyeroll*

NTAYRT, but seriously, shrugging off "mentions" of rape the way you just did is what trivializing rape means. Thanks for proving the OP's point.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I asked for ACTUAL rape scenes.

Implying that the series is FILLED with rape would imply that there is ACTUAL rape going on, not just mentions of it.

Ummm...

Actual rape scene is a scene with rape in it, a mention of rape isn't...?

They're not actual, detailed rape scenes, but the implication that women are being raped and the implied, constant threat of sexual violence is enough to make me incredibly uncomfortable. Just because you don't read about it in graphic detail doesn't mean that the implications aren't enough to make people want to steer clear. The idea that just because there aren't a bunch of scenes describing graphic rapes involving main characters, then that means people shouldn't be bothered that rape seems to be such a common thing in the world within the books, is ridiculous. It's okay if people like the books and if they aren't bothered by it, but people are affected differently by different things. If it bothers some it's not because they're being overly-sensitive or a "wet blanket" for not wanting to read about a world where women are routinely raped and threatened with sexual violence; that's like saying that anyone who reads and enjoys the books is supporting rape. Both are ridiculous positions to take.

Rape happens in the real world, yes, but I'd really rather not see constant mentions of it used to make a world more "gritty" or "dark". The fact that people are fighting and killing one another would be quite enough for that. This is a personal preference.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I hate when people make the excuse that the rape has to be there because it's "more realistic that way" or he's "subverting tropes." No, he's just adding rape to make the books sensational and as OTT as possible. The rape/murder is there for the same reasons other silly fantasy tropes exist: to entertain, not to make some kind of "statement."

GRRM is conscentious of how he handled that.

He REALLY isn't. GRRM thinks that the Dany/Drogo rape is "romantic."

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Why could she not have just hid and be terrified?"

How very cute. Yes, she could have done that, and she would have been very lucky, too. People are assholes, and in a prison riot for instance, women at all present tend to get raped. Repeatedly. I would assume that a living representation of the unfair system which had lately done nothing but fuck them from above, metaphorically, would offer too much vulnerability to pass up to an angry mob of rioters.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, GRRM was totally obligated to show this.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, just as obligated as he was NOT to show it.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
I bet GRRM would never show the fact that men get raped in prison. Which is I think the driving point behind of all this. There's a lot of "realistic" rape in asoiaf, but it's never done against men.
