"It saddens me that no one else is bothered by this."

Maybe because we're not a bunch of wet blankets? Yes Westeros is a crapsack world. That hardly means GRRM "trivializes" rape and the characters that do engage in such activities are not the heroes.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
This forever and ever and fucking ever.

You know what happened in medieval times and even today? A lot?

RAPE. FUCKING RAPE. IT'S REALITY. IT'S A REAL FUCKING THING.

The story is based in medieval times. What the hell do you think happened then? Sunshine and roses? No. No it didn't.

Genghis Khan, after winning a battle, ordered that his solders rape every woman in a tribe or city over the age of seven.

That shit fucking happened.

Guess what happens in books and movies based off of that time period.

FUCKING RAPE.

Jesus fucking christ.

You know what's even worse? There are only two cases of rape in the tv series so far. And one is questionable.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
And exactly why I'd never watch. Just think of all the guys getting off on it makes me sick. And to think humanity without societal constraints would reduce itself to this. The boys would be ecstatic.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
But how does thinking about all the girls getting off on it make you feel?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
But don't y'know, there's NEVER been a case of girls raping or molesting someone. EVER.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
So the women who watch this get off on watching other women get raped and violated? Good to know.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
And there's also never been a female with a rape kink. NEVAR.

It actually really, really bothers me when people try to say that female-perpetrated sexual assault does not exist, or shouldn't be as important as male-perpetrated sexual assault because it isn't as common. Almost nothing pisses me off more (other than people who try to blame victims for their own sexual assault, and people who try to trivialize mental illnesses).

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
>This is what feminists actually believe

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
*eye rolls* Only if you're listening to the straw-feminists. It's rather common among feminist conversations to mention the important role of men as allies when it comes to combating rape and rape culture. Not the "men, don't rape" sense but "hey guys, here's how to be aware of misogyny/slut shaming/rape culture/etc and things you can do to stand against it."

Try talking to actual feminists (their are even men who are, not just women) and ignore the popularized and bastardized tripe.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Damn straight. The only thing stopping me from whipping out my dick and going on a wild raping spree is because the law says not to.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
You can't tell me that if you were raised in a society where rape was accepted as the norm for males in forced marriage and war situations, you and many of your present-day brethren wouldn't partake. Human nature is what it is.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
And you can't tell me that women wouldn't do the same thing if they lived in such a society. Men tend to hold the power so they abuse it, but don't even pretend that if women held power they wouldn't wield it as well.

This.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Men are likely to rape if boys and girls alike are taught that it is acceptable behaviour; i.e., if society accepts rape. Some might not, but most will. Consider the South African statistics (from the sexual violence in SA wikipedia article): A 2009 survey found one in four South African men from KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape Provinces admitted to raping someone. And that's just those who admitted it! Nearly three out of four men who admitted rape stated they had first forced a woman or girl into sex before the age of 20, and nearly one in ten admitted doing so before the age of 10.

Most modern men have had it inculcated in them that women are human beings, that consent is important, from earliest childhood. Women are also taught that they have value. I think a lot of people don't realise how much of this is learned behaviour. If rape is a trivial matter in society, and women are viewed by most men as chattel, then yes, most men will rape, and if it is considered a crime, it will only be to the men who own her.

People who say things like "men aren't animals!" seem to forget that all humans are, in fact, animals; there are animals that rape.

Of course women rape, too. If the situations were exactly reversed, I don't doubt that most women would rape and consider it trivial.

People here seem to have a very optimistic view of human nature. We've progressed very far to get to the point we are at now, and we have a long way to go yet. We might even get there eventually if we aren't all wiped out first.

This is a good comment.

Did Genghis Khan ride on the backs of dragons and dodge ice zombies too?

The issue isn't whether or not it's "realistic" (which people tend to way overstate and I highly doubt most of the people who make these claims as if they're undeniable truths are history majors), it's the way GRRM delights in writing about it. I can practically see the perverted old man grin when he writes the 500th passage about how "small, perky breasts" and how WHAT IF SANSA GOT RAPED. There is a way to handle these things intelligently and to unpack them, but GRRM never does.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
If you think GRRM gets off to writing about Sansa almost getting raped then you're an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you think he doesn't?

Not only on the threat of her being raped, but on her being passed around from dude to dude and constantly being salivated over. Even Tyrion, GRRM and fandom's favorite, is heralded as some big-hearted hero because he decided not to rape her.

It's obvious to me when I read Sansa and Dany's chapters that GRRM fetishizes the hell out of them. I don't see how anyone can come to any other conclusion from the way he writes about them. -shrug-

He called Dany and Drogo's wedding night "romantic".

He said that he still pictures his characters as he originally imagined them, not as the series portrayed them. When asked what character he would like to meet the most, he said Dany because she's hot - talking about a 13-15 year old here.

This is the kind of mindset he has.

No, it's not a realistic fantasy world. Just because he doesn't pack a ton of politically correct moral righteousness into denouncing rape in a world where it's pretty much established as at least being something unpleasant but to be expected under certain craptastic circumstances, doesn't fucking mean he delights in writing about it. It just means he's not treating the reader like a moron. In the west (and, in some parts of the world, they still do) it used to be that girls as young as twelve and thirteen got married, were raped (or was it marital sex? We think of it as rape, but this perspective has obviously changed over time), and so on and so forth. Which Borgia was it that got married at like, thirteen? I think it was Lucrezia. I don't watch the TV show. GoT world? It's craptastic.

ayrt

I don't expect him to condemn rape at every turn, I just expect him to handle it with a modicum of intelligence, insight, and examination, which he doesn't. He can give Jaime a great arc and interesting character development just from having his fucking hand cut off, but he can't be arsed to deal with the ramifications of all the sexual abuse he loves to write about.
