Apparently it's "a term, originating from cyberpunk fiction and culture, referring to the real (that is, not virtual) world, the world of flesh and blood. somewhat tongue-in-cheek. the opposite of cyberspace."

Okay...why would that be in the least bit offensive?

I don't think it's all that bad, but I definitely think it's slightly derogatory. It's a way of looking down on the real world and holding the virtual world above it, implying that bodies are just a sack of meat.

I'm sorry if it offends you, but with a name like 'meatspace' I can't take it the least bit seriously. The definition does say it's 'somewhat tongue-in-cheek', though I can't imagine it being anything but very tongue-in-cheek. It just sounds silly to me.

That's not offensive. It's a potentially condescending and insulting, but it's not isolating any one group or anything.

I have never heard this word before, but I don't think it's derogatory. People use their mind to operate in both cyber and RL space, what differs is how they occupy space in them. So "meatspace" would be the place you occupy with your body (which IS meat), but it does not mean that, while operating in it, you're reduced to the body.

Blahhh it sounds super convoluted. Sorry, English is not my first language!

Personally, I think it's more derogatory to insinuate that what happens within the virtual world is not also a part of one's reality. "IRL" has the implication that only things that happen offline are "real," ignoring the fact that our "realities" are now so entwined with the digital world that it's difficult to separate the two. Why should talking to a stranger on the street be classified as being more "real" than this comment I'm making in response to yours? It's not; the former just happened in meatspace, while the latter was online.

That aside...the real world sort of sucks ass? What's so wrong about liking the virtual world better? I can articulate myself better, ignore people more easily, and sometimes I even get to be badass and earn a bunch of money! The virtual world is awesome.

It's not wrong. It just means that you've a mal-adpated coward. You are incapable of handling real world interactions, and they frighten you, so you escape into a fake world in which you don't have to present your true self.

The reality is that your true self sucks. That's why you don't get along with people in the real world. That's why you have to escape into fantasy. You are a pathetic waste of oxygen, and the tragedy of modern society is that we've made it possible for you to feel like you actually matter.

It's easier to find people you share common interests with online than it is in the real world so preferring social interaction in cyberspace doesn't necessarily make one a coward. And IME if your "true self" sucks you tend to be just as unpopular online as you are off if not more so because people, like you clearly, are even less likely to be polite.

Then stop and think about what it means that characters in a cyberpunk novel would seriously use a word that is meant to be tongue-in-cheek.

Now, stop and think about the intention of the author.

... yeah, I don't get it, either. Trigger and content warnings should be reserved for things that are, you know, actually triggering and/or troubling and actually an issue in the real world.
